I'm also trained in EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Brainspotting and have been recognized as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and Gottman-trained relationship therapist.
It's nice to meet you! As a Licensed Professional Counselor at Gilbert Counselors LLC, I draw equally from my professional training and the insights I've gained throughout my 30+ year marriage and experiences raising two now-grown children. I think most of us would agree that we're living in challenging times. Many of us feel anxious and pessimistic about the future. We may feel unable to draw pleasure and comfort from our most important relationships or stuck in destructive patterns we believe we're powerless to change. Some of us are facing difficult life transitions or overpowering feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Hello! I am Heather Vance, a Licensed Professional Counselor & Art Therapist enjoying 22 years of helping children, teens, adults, and families work through painful life events and build skills essential to wellbeing: self-awareness, emotional regulation, adaptability, empathy, value-based living and effective relationship practices. I specialize in helping children and adults with ADHD understand their brains, manage challenges, and harness their unique cognitive gifts. Change is a process, not an "on/off" switch; lasting change occurs in stages and is characterized by ambivalence, failure, adaptation, and growth.

I enjoy utilizing art, music, narrative, mindfulness and other holistic modalities to assist my clients through their healing process.
Finding value, worth, joy, and passion in life is often difficult due to personal hang-ups, breakdowns in communication, and feeling as though emotions and feelings are stunted or underdeveloped. Anchored Within Counseling was founded on the belief that all humans need, deserve, and require the biological, cultural, religious, social necessities of safety, security, comfort, and acceptance to live fully. Vulnerability and transparency are often difficult to access and within our therapeutic work we will create space to invite, sit with, and embrace the uncomfortable to grow. Inhale to create space, Exhale to move into that space.

In my sessions, I aim to create a space that is both comforting and collaborative to facilitate support, validation, and grace. It is through reflection that we gain an understanding of where we stand and what we believe. Perhaps it is finally time for you to take care of you. Therapy offers a special and dedicated time for you to explore and discover who you really are, while giving attention to the parts of you that are hurting, as well as to parts of you that aren't fully alive. But therapy is not just for the challenging moments; it's also designed for when your life may be perfectly fine. My goal is to help you feel most settled within yourself, to develop very fulfilling and satisfying relationships, and to create purpose and meaning in your life.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
