Endings are difficult, uncertainty is scary, and transition is hard. Unresolved grief , trauma, and/or emotions can become complicated, resulting in behaviors and thought patterns that effect all areas of your life. It can lead to burnout, loss of energy, and emotional imbalance. It can cause isolation, anger, and confusion; hopelessness, loneliness, and despair. While grief will touch everyone, in some way- whether brought on by death , divorce, illness, job loss , trauma, etc.- your story is not anyone else's but your own. There’s no set limit on how long it should take you to “move on” and no “right” way to grieve your situation.

Grief is complicated & not just experienced with the loss of a loved one, but also in the "little deaths" endured in the hurts/disappointments of life, the yearning for our past selves, and the realization of the selves we will never be.
*Temporarily unable to accept new clients. Please email me to be put on my waitlist* I'm so glad you are taking a HUGE step in your quest for change! SPOILER ALERT: Once you accept and love yourself exactly as you are, then you can change. I am dedicated to empowering clients to change the narrative of how they view themselves, others, and the world in order to create a more meaningful/fulfilling life. I strive to help my clients live courageously by approaching rather than avoiding their emotions, getting to know and love their true self (flaws and all), and by valuing the journeys of their life over the destinations.

When experiencing loss through death , divorce, disaster, life changes, or any other form, The Grief Recovery Method helps clients evaluate where they are and provides clients with actions to take to complete that, which was left undone.
We all have struggles from time to time. Life can bring loss , disappointment, confusion, frustration, and the feeling of being completely overwhelmed. The clutter of emotions can take over our lives and affect our relationships. A counselor provides an emphatic ear, support, and a safe place to sort through the struggles and emotions. Many times I find clients are unaware of their strengths therefore underutilizing them. Some simply are unsure of the next step. I help clients regain control of their emotions and clear the way to better choices.

With this in mind, I also use many expressive therapies to address, loss , grief and trauma.
The human experience can be challenging at times, but can also be beautiful and meaningful. Learning that both are normal parts of the journey can be empowering and allow one to reach our dreams and goals by overcoming the blocks and pain that keep us from reaching those dreams. We can learn to grow through pain, enjoy moments of pure joy and build community. I am a Licensed Masters Social Work, Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor, Equine Therapist and Certified Thanatologist along with EMDR training. I have worked with a wide variety of clients over the course of my 23-year career.

My personal experience with depression and anxiety stemming from childhood trauma and grief led to my career choice as a social worker.
I am dedicated to providing a safe and confidential environment for patients to connect with self and address any issues that inhibit growth. I believe that healthy relationships with self and others will allow an individual to build a realistic picture of life and assist in moving through challenges. Years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly population in acute, long-term, residential, and outpatient settings has enabled me to obtain a vast understanding of resources available and knowledge of referral sources for additional treatment if needed.

I specialize in the arenas of anxiety, stress related to career, depression and mood disorders, as well as in relationships, complicated bereavement and trauma.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist, and my goal in practicing psychotherapy is to establish an ongoing conversation and to develop a relationship which brings a client greater self-knowledge, access to their inner resources, liberation of repressed feelings and healing from trauma. Jon Kabat-Zinn's expression is central for me in my work: “No matter how many scars we carry from what we have gone through and suffered in the past, our intrinsic wholeness is still there… We are still what was present in us before the scarring…And we can reconnect with that, because it is the very nature of who we truly are".

I welcome adolescents, adults and families and support them through through moments of grief , depression, anxiety, adjustment to transitions and/or life experiences.
Often, we cling to the notion that we are "human becomings" and that our best moments will arrive down the road...but it just isn't so. Those future moments will be no more special than this one right now (and less so if they contain the inevitable disappointment flowing from a life of conditioned expectations). The way you live this moment is the way you live your life. If you are waiting for it to get better then "waiting" is who you are. Loss , shock, grief and despair are fully part of the human experience. In fact, they are proof of life and evidence of love. Our challenge is to keep going and to find moments of joy again.

Having had experienced many losses in my life, I often wonder what to do next or how to move forward. Sometimes life happens so quickly that it seems like there is not enough time to catch a breath. It's a scary feeling to have to figure out the hustle and bustle of life while still hurting inside. Fearful of being misunderstood, judged or like "it" may not work may be the negative thoughts that have developed during such a devastating loss .

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
