Many people seek out therapy because they feel something is off or wrong or just plain missing. Maybe you count yourself among that number. Perhaps you noticed that something just isn’t working. And if you knew how to fix it, you wouldn't be reading this.
We often say that if you ask three therapists what therapy is, you'll get about five different answers. The way I see it, therapy is a chance to piece together (1) a coherent sense of what is going on in your life right now; (2) an idea of how you arrived at your current place in life; and (3) the ways you solve or deal with those problems in the present.
Based on that foundation, therapy can give hope of alternatives to the present situation that brought you to therapy. At heart, a therapist helps people with their relationships with others, themselves, and the very world they live in. See? I am just one clinician, and you have two definitions of what therapy is and what it can do.
The truth of the matter is that the problems that lead us to seek therapy are not as clear-cut as what sends us to a medical specialist. A cardiologist helps people with their heart. An orthopedist helps people move. As a therapist, I help you with...you.
