Are you a parent/guardian struggling to help your child or adolescent ? You may feel helpless and isolated if your child is experiencing behavioral or emotional difficulties. I can help you by working with your child from a developmentally appropriate approach. Each person has a unique journey, and no one should ever feel they must navigate it alone. Therefore, throughout this process, your child will experience a warm, safe, and accepting environment as we work collaboratively to help. I’ll also work to help you understand your child more and provide you with tools to feel more empowered.

Sometimes trying to feel better feels hopeless. No matter what you do or try, your anxiety just won't go away. The depression keeps hitting you like waves in the ocean, coming up over and over again. Or maybe it's one of your most important relationships. You just can't seem to figure things out with your partner. No matter what parenting technique you try, you just can't seem to get through to your teenager . I don't know exactly where you are at today, but I do know how it can be intimidating to ask for help.

Life is something everyone has the privilege of experiencing, as well as, the challenge of facing. It is both a beautiful and difficult thing. The problem is when we are faced with challenges and feel we have nowhere to turn and think we have to figure things out alone. It is a hopeless feeling so many people carry, but it doesn’t have to be this way. The truth is, if there is breath in your lungs there is hope for your future.

I am a caring counselor with 15 years of experience working with children of all ages and backgrounds. I have helped kids through life changes such as their parents’ divorce or the loss of a loved one, all types of anxiety, and behavioral concerns such as anger management and ADHD. Treating the child with respect and dignity and meeting them where they are are the heart of my practice. I use play, bibliotherapy, and expressive arts to connect with your child, help them share their thoughts and feelings, and explore coping skills that work for them. Take that first step on behalf of your child. Call and set up an appointment with me.

Brené Brown once said, “We don’t have to do it alone, we were never meant to.” If you are to find yourself, your family, or your child struggling, the best thing you can do is seek out someone to listen and empathize with your situation. I have years of experience working in the mental health field. I primarily draw from Humanistic and Adlerian schools of psychology. I believe the foundation of your healing journey is a strong client-therapist relationship built on authenticity, empathy, and trust. I have experience working with: anxiety, depression, ADHD, self-harm, trauma, disruptive behaviors, and parent/child relational issues.

My life feels like chaos! How can I get past my past? How can I save my marriage? How can I achieve my goals in life? These are common issues that bring people into counseling. To borrow a quote from coach Wooden "although there is no progress without change, not all change is progress." Getting started can feel uncomfortable at first but usually as you proceed most people are engaged, energized, and feeling the benefits. My style is such that it does not feel like therapy--rather someone you know who has been down this road as well.

There is a widespread implication in our society that difficult feelings are unacceptable or inconvenient. If I could assure you of anything, it would be that your emotions are valid and useful, no matter how uncomfortable they are. Let's use them as a guide in discovering what your mind and body are really trying to tell you. I want to support you in becoming a wise leader of yourself, not a prisoner of your pain. With each small step you make toward internal balance, external balance is not far behind.

Sometimes we find ourselves so far down a road we never expected to be wondering how we got to this point, skeptical that anyone could actually help us. This human experience can be incredibly overwhelming and lonely, but it doesn't have to stay that way forever. Are you desperate for change but aren't sure that is even possible for you? You desire to live authentically with mental, emotional, and relational health. You know you need support navigating the coping mechanisms you have used to help you get through each day but are no longer serving you. Whatever stage of life you are in, there is hope for healing.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
