Ideal clients are children with supportive families who are having home and/or school concerns that can range from anxiety, depression, or social skills to toileting, compliance, or sleeping. Goals for these can address things like compliance, tantrums, social communication, home/schoolwork completion, or anxiety/depression. Addressing concerns that children and adolescents display often requires caregivers and family to jump on board with creating a supportive environment for the child or adolescent to succeed. Families who seek help often want assistance because they suspect the path may get harder in the future.

I am passionate about helping children, adolescents, and adults work through personal struggles that cause functional impairments. I utilize a holistic therapy approach focusing on each individual's emotional, relational, and physical needs. This modality helps to inspire and guide clients to change towards a healthier and more balanced life so that they can thrive. A key component to my practice is developing a compassionate and authentic therapeutic relationship with those I work with. Therapy is a safe place where I hope to assist you in exploring the past, creating peace in the present, and developing hope for the future.

Is your child anxious, easily angered, or struggles to focus at school? Maybe your child has difficulties with friends, everyday emotions and seems to not express emotions in a healthy way? Please rest easy. You're in the right place. So many children have similar difficulties and it's extremely frustrating as a caregiver when you just don't know how to help. Because children's brains are developmentally wired differently, they don't often express emotions easily with words. Since traditional talk therapy isn't generally effective with little ones, I use play therapy to help my young clients.

I would say my ideal client would be a veteran of any age to work with. I believe veterans experiencing issues can easily open up to other veterans who lived through similar experiences. Many veterans have difficulty returning and adjusting to civilian life; this experience can bring a lot of frustration, anger, and confusion along with any trauma they have experienced while serving. Veterans can experience many different emotions that are difficult to handle when returning to a life they left. Accomplishing tasks, no matter how easy, makes the veteran feel like completed something important.

Healing requires honest care without judgment. In order to provide individualized treatment and support, I will work cooperatively with you to clarify your treatment goals and draw from a variety of methodologies to create a plan that fits your needs. My style is warm, open, encouraging, and direct. I consider myself an active therapist, combining experience, education, creativity, with a realistic and effective approach to treatment. To me, an individual should be treated as a whole, including the mind, the body, and the (soul/self)- whatever that is to them.

The primary guiding principle in my approach to therapy is empathy. I am convinced that "feeling with" people is a key to healing. When people feel listened to and truly understood, an atmosphere of mutual respect is created. It has been my experience that people do not feel valued unless they know that someone is genuinely interested in understanding their pain.

Most current symptoms are connected to past experiences. I use root-work interventions to help you identify the origin of your problem. I will help you begin to think of your trauma or negative experiences as unhealthy roots that need to be unearthed to make room for new, healthy growth. Once the root is identified we can evaluate how it has influenced the way you see yourself and the world around you now. We then begin reprocessing any self-limiting beliefs, so you are able to move towards more adaptive belief systems and, hopefully, a healthier life.

Hello my name is Derek Spiegel and I have been practicing as a Licensed Professional Counselor [LPC] in the field for over 20 years. Life is full of endless possibilities for each one of us. Coupled with the possibilities there are "things" that happen in our journey that we are not ready for. My Great Grandmother Rosie was one of the most influential people in my life. When she passed I didn't want to face the sadness. However I found restoration and healing in the storm of my life. Let me help you find shelter from the storms of your life.

Do you spend a lot of time wondering how you got to this point? You haven’t been yourself; maybe others have noticed. You want your life back but the road seems so hard. You might feel all alone. When you find yourself here the important things can start to fall apart like relationships with the ones you love. Or perhaps it's a relationship problem that started the downward spiral. In these hard places you need to be seen and understood by someone. Learning coping strategies and positive self-talk can only take you so far. You deserve therapy that leads to healing and wholeness helping you become the best version of yourself.

What type of Jonesboro mental health professional is right for me?
While most types of therapy have a lot in common, they also fall into clusters that share core features, such as cognitive therapies or psychodynamic approaches. It is important to seek someone who practices evidence-based therapy, meaning one or more forms of treatment that have been scientifically evaluated and tested, and demonstrate consistent improvement for a majority of patients.

If you are unsure about choosing the right therapist, it might be useful to first learn more about therapy types and modalities.
How to find a therapist in Jonesboro?
When looking to find a therapist, it is certainly important to consider training and credentials. Studies also indicate that the therapeutic alliance, or the relationship the client develops with the therapist, is an important factor in their ability to work together to achieve the client’s goals.
