We can all heal and grow! Much of the time our growth is catalyzed by pain. We experience a loss or a significant stressor. We come up against trauma or blocks from our past. These periods of chaos and pain can also contain valuable resources. We can use them to create a life that makes us happier. We can become healthier people with better relationships. I use compassion and my 30+ years of experience with the latest methods to help you feel better, become more personally empowered and realize your goals. My focus is relief and solution oriented.

Do you struggle with anxiety, depression, a challenging relationship, or feeling stuck in a way you just don’t know how to explain? Does it affect your day-to-day life, relationships, ability to function, your work, or career? Do you feel emotionally exhausted or overwhelmed by what it means to live up to someone else’s standards, just getting through the day, answering emails, texts or calls, the thought that there’s no light at the end of the tunnel? Do you wonder if life could ever be better? Maybe you have recognized you have been using a substance just to try to ease the emotional pain and relax?

Relationships, marriage, marriage crisis, codependency, trauma, mid-life crisis, and grief
I am a marriage and marriage crisis specialist & manage marriage crises from start to finish. I wrote a book, "I (Think) I Want Out: What to Do When One of You Wants to End Your Marriage." The book is for disillusioned couples and those in crisis. I work through a trauma lens, going for healing at the root. My style is educational (you have a lot to learn about relationships!), coaching, and healing. I am not like your average therapist bear, and almost all my clients tell me that. I have years of experience and training and am confident in what I offer. I appreciate those struggling and who accept personal responsibility.

Bio video on my website...When you pay for therapy, you're expecting something of tangible value. All too often what you get instead is a nice person on a couch and little else. That’s not me. With high energy and humor, I help people recover from sexual addiction; I help couples lost in conflict and hopelessness; and I help parents with teens and young adults. I work with sexual abuse, attachment wounds, and traumas/PTSD of all kinds. I am a Christian, and I approach therapy from a clinical perspective. We can integrate your faith as much as you feel comfortable, or not at all.

Just by reading this, you are showing your strength and courage to take the first step to speak with a therapist. For many people, it is a scary step to make and keep a counseling appointment. People often worry and wonder things like, what will counseling be like, what will the therapist ask me, and will therapy really help me? When I meet you, I will commend you for your courage to come to counseling and we will discuss what brings you to counseling. Then we will make what I call a counseling GPS. This is a plan of how to get from where you are to where you want to be (through counseling).

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
