I believe that people seek out counseling because they feel that they are lacking guidance and are struggling to make sense of the problem(s) or issue(s) they are experiencing. In other words, they feel “stuck”. Because of this, they are searching for a way to change, move forward, or process their own thoughts and feelings related to whatever is causing their problem. Each person has the option to take charge of their own narrative and change their current problems or circumstances or create a new life all together. Through the counseling process, I am able to help my clients accomplish that and move forward.

Perspective changes over time through therapy, but no one can speed the process of grief, whether from death, illness, divorce, depression, job loss, or even the demise of a beloved pet.
I specialize in treating grief and trauma, using EMDR in matters of unresolved disturbance. Whether someone suffers physical pain, anxiety, or the inability to sleep due to nightmares or disruptive memories, eye movement desensitization reprocessing can help alleviate the trauma of PTSD to help put the pieces of one’s life together following a disturbing event. Trauma takes many different forms as does healing, and healing disturbance is as individual as the individual him/herself. The best part of working with clients is helping to restore joy and insight to the client’s vision for life.

Are you experiencing a life transition such as divorce or a possible career change that seems nearly impossible to work through?
I don't believe that any one model of therapy works perfectly for every client. That would be like trying to place the same stereotype to a specific gender, race, or otherwise, when that is simply unfair. I have 15 plus years of experience working with various issues. I see clients ages 18 and up.

For over 40 years, I have been helping clients who are in the midst of life transitions: career change, separation/ divorce, aging, coping with chronic illness and all types of loss.
I conceptualize therapy as a way to better understand ourselves and others and to identify barriers to our living more consciously and completely. When this is pursued with a therapist with whom you have a trusting connection, much is healed and accomplished.

I work with trauma-the client decides what is traumatic for them, so this covers a wide variety of issues such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, divorce, domestic violence, sexual and physical abuse, etc.
I have been working in the mental health field since 2002. I have been nationally certified since 2004. I am EMDR certified, EMDRIA approved Consultant, and EMDR Trainer. I use a trauma-focused approach to treatment because it is a very holistic approach to care (body, mind, and emotional reactions to stress). I prefer to work with adolescents and adults in therapy services. I also offer consultation services for therapists and other mental health providers. I received my credential to be an EMDR trainier on 9/12/2023 and offer both online and in-person trainings.

Divorce Therapists

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
