I believe that people seek out counseling because they feel that they are lacking guidance and are struggling to make sense of the problem(s) or issue(s) they are experiencing. In other words, they feel “stuck”. Because of this, they are searching for a way to change, move forward, or process their own thoughts and feelings related to whatever is causing their problem. Each person has the option to take charge of their own narrative and change their current problems or circumstances or create a new life all together. Through the counseling process, I am able to help my clients accomplish that and move forward.

Overall, I feel I integrate several approaches to provide holistic care. I find emotional education helpful for all of my clients. I work with several clients who struggle with anxiety and struggle with coping skills.
My ideal client is someone who wants to be the best they can be for themselves and their circle of people. I want to help them find the best ways to cope with life's daily struggles while also accomplishing their goals. A client who is eager to work, grow, and learn. Clients that know their limitations and their strengths. I love to see clients learn new skills, reach new heights, whether that be graduating high school, getting their dream job, improving their romantic relationships, or being able to tackle something that previously scared them.

With all that’s going on in our world, it seems everyone is dealing to some extent with depression and anxiety so those are the two most common reasons people I work with have for seeking therapy.
My name is Lucy Towbin. I am an LCSW and I use a holistic approach to your mental health, including sleep, nutrition, exercise, social interactions, etc. I use DBT and CBT the most but use other modalities when it seems most appropriate for a client.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, emotionally drained, or stuck? If you are uncertain about what to do, try therapy. As a veteran, I understand the weight of trauma, self-doubt, and resilience worn thin. Healing does not always look like motivation or progress, but change is possible after years of carrying everything alone. I hold a special space for black women, who are often expected to be strong while managing the unique pressures of societal norms. We support individuals of all races, genders, and cultural backgrounds. We are culturally affirming, providing a space to be empowered and grow.

I use Brainspotting, Neurofeedback, & Somatic modalities to help process emotional wounds that show up as anxiety, depression, or ADHD.
Your life feels like an absolute $hit show most days but the show must go on. Your drug use has shattered all of your close relationships. You put on a fake smile, expensive perfume, your best cuff links, and you boss your way through the day. You may do the direct opposite; you get everyone out of the house, slink into bed, pull the covers over your head and pray for change because life just feels like it's too much to bear. It sucks and we get it. Let's work together to get your life feeling manageable again. We are a small, black owned practice with 2 generations and 35 years of combined experience. Bring your worst; we got you!

I specialize in treating adults who struggle with depression, anxiety, intimate partner violence, substance abuse, behavioral modification, grief, self-image, and other life difficulties.
I can think of no greater responsibility than keeping someone’s secrets or any greater joy than holding someone’s hand while they do the difficult work of changing their lives. I became a therapist because I believe in our ability to CHANGE. The ability to change is one of our greatest gifts and abilities, but in life sometimes we get STUCK. Stuck in bad relationships, stuck in dead-end jobs, or stuck in patterns of behavior that keep us miserable and defeated. My job and my joy is to help you get UN-stuck.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
