After working in the mental health field for 19 years I have found most issues leading to therapy are rooted from unresolved trauma. I believe an individual can heal from all of their trauma when working with a competently trained trauma healing therapist. I have seen young and old client's lives change, as well as, relationships improved through trauma healing. I work with individuals, relationships, and groups. I also have experience in sexual, chemical, and process addiction treatment. Further, I work with existential crises guiding clients to find meaning and purpose.

Not accepting new clients
When I envision my ideal client, I see someone who is courageous, ready to embark on a transformative journey towards improved emotional well-being. This individual may be grappling with various issues, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, or simply the need for personal growth and self-discovery. They recognize that something within them needs attention and they're seeking support to explore, understand, and heal. My ideal client is someone who has the desire to take control of their life, to break free from the constraints of their past, and to build a brighter future.

There is great joy helping those that have lost hope find true hope, this is a journey, everyone's story is different so the journey is different. I don't just work to help one change behavior but instead what is the motivation for the behavior. What is holding you back form walking the course that God has called you to. I look forward to helping you see where your beliefs about God, yourself and others hold you back. Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good, acceptable and perfect.

Do you struggle to find answers to the big questions in your life? Does your ability to enjoy the present get hijacked by memories from your past or fears about your future? Do you experience strange physical feelings or intrusive emotions that feel like they're beyond your control and that your doctor can’t explain?

Do you find yourself becoming overwhelmed by anxiety? You may notice your chest feels tight and your mind races from one thought to another. At times we can be our own worst critic. Anxiety sometimes interferes with a person’s ability to connect with others or to feel safe while in public places.

Each day we take a walk on our own personal journey through life. Our journeys will take many different paths, twists and turns we will have to navigate. Sometimes we can navigate the journeys by ourselves and at others we may need someone to walk beside us. I have walked with people of all ages, from age 3-adulthood on their journeys since 2004. Up to this point my personal journey has been working with agencies, but now I have decided to take my own journey into a private practice setting.

Healing requires honest care without judgment. In order to provide individualized treatment and support, I will work cooperatively with you to clarify your treatment goals and draw from a variety of methodologies to create a plan that fits your needs. My style is warm, open, encouraging, and direct. I consider myself an active therapist, combining experience, education, creativity, with a realistic and effective approach to treatment. To me, an individual should be treated as a whole, including the mind, the body, and the (soul/self)- whatever that is to them.

I offer at least 3 FREE counseling sessions, either in person at my office, on the phone, or on the internet via zoom. Some of my best work has been with women and adolescent girls, helping them become stronger and more empowered. I can help you find within yourself what you need to lead a more satisfying life. I will help you identify your strengths, needs, abilities, and preferences for counseling and honor those preferences. During our first three sessions together, we will make the decision as to whether we are a good fit - and either continue our therapeutic relationship or arrange other counseling arrangements for you.

Has your life as you've known it been shattered, leaving you feeling lonely, broken and at a loss of how to put the pieces back together? Maybe you're consumed with feelings of depression, anxiety, and self doubt, just struggling to keep up with the daily grind. Perhaps you have unresolved trauma that is interfering with your ability to enjoy life in the present. Regardless of what has brought you to this point, you are exhausted from trying to manage it on your own.

Life comes with challenges. Among those could be a divorce, loss of a loved one, a single or series of traumatic events or transitional struggles. Adults and children are effected in different ways. The manifestation of those effects can differ in behavior; sadness, worry, as well as difficulty making decisions . I have the training to help you and or your family work through the issues and learn a set of skills to help you cope with these challenges.

Life can be challenging and difficult and we all struggle with sadness, anxiety, anger, loss and past trauma issues that can feel overwhelming and interfere with our ability to function and maintain our relationships. Do you want to learn about the purpose of our emotions and manage the energy that comes with those feelings? Do you want to understand how your past experiences have shaped your core beliefs and emotional responses and learn how to take positive steps to unpack emotional baggage that is weighing you down? Would you benefit from learning better communication skills to reduce personal conflicts and improve relationships?

My path to becoming a therapist was more of a calling than a career decision. I’m not particularly suited to this profession. I’m introverted, which causes me to present as somewhat unfriendly and aloof to strangers. I’m really not concerned with small talk or what I consider the superficialities of life. But when it comes to exploring the deepest, most difficult and painful core aspects of your life that’s the space where I feel most comfortable. The foundation of my practice is my own personal journey in 12-step recovery. I would say I was "chosen" for the gift of recovery from a self-destructive lifestyle more than 34 years ago.

For many years my clients have primarily been individuals, groups, and families coming out of abusive and sometimes violent relationships and addiction. Although that was the original primary focus, most of them also struggled with other accompanying factors like depression, anxiety and other serious mental health diagnoses. My clinical focus has recently shifted to more of a community-based population. I have found this work incredibly rewarding. I enjoy working with additional needs such as grief, prenatal, postpartum depression, and abandonment trauma to name a few.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Sharp County?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
