We often place pressure on ourselves to be okay, to power through, and to be strong. Yet we all encounter times when we need extra care and support. You may be navigating a major life transition, experiencing anxiety or overwhelm, or feeling stuck and unsure how to make a change. Asking for help is a sign of remarkable strength. You deserve support, and to feel the power and relief of being seen and accepted just as you are. Therapy offers a space to reconnect with yourself, deepen your self-awareness and understanding, and uncover ways to move forward.

I love to help people who are straddling cultures and have a complex relationship with duty and autonomy. So many of us have internalized beliefs around what we are supposed to be doing and how we are supposed to live our lives but haven’t had a chance to sit down and workshop whether this is congruent with our overall goals and wants for ourselves. When we don’t take the time and space to heal the inner child and build self confidence to live our best lives, things like anxiety, depression, and emotional reactivity can creep in keeping us feeling stuck.

I work well with women experiencing pain relate to loneliness, motherhood, generalized anxiety, feelings of failure, and worries of purposelessness.
As a licensed mental health counselor, I work to provide a safe place for my clients to explore their stories, learn about themselves, and progress towards their goals. When therapy concludes, my hope is my clients have a stronger sense of self, more authentic relationships, and a greater understanding of their life's potential and impact. In order to do this, I utilize psychodynamic and existential psychotherapies in collaboration with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

You want to appear confident and like you have it all together, but deep down, you struggle to get it all done and stay connected to the present moment. You may be fed up with the constant battle of proving yourself, feeling anxious you are missing something, or preoccupied with pleasing others. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to feel connected and enjoy the NOW. You’re ready to smile and laugh again. Most of all, you’re ready to take charge of your life and no longer be controlled by anxiety and grief.

My work is especially helpful for people functioning at a high level experiencing anxiety, depression, self-doubt, lack of motivation, and trouble with intimacy.
Therapy is for all of us, but what it means and how it works is unique to each of us. While we share much in common, we all carry experiences, beliefs, dreams, and fears that are ours alone. They give us our distinct perspectives. They shape our present and future, often in surprising ways. I tailor my therapeutic approach to suit what makes you uniquely you. I like to explore how our pasts shape our current experience. I focus on our relationships, as our attachments often are a driving force in how we go about our daily lives.

When we face major life changes such as a career shift, move to a different city or country, or start of parenthood, we often feel lost. Although life changes, we do not always change along with it. We might be struggling with anxiety or depression, or we might not even be sure what we are facing. We need assistance to process, sort it out, and understand what is happening and who we are now. This is the ideal place for that. Shelena will provide you with the space and support needed to navigate through changes, find better ways, determine the next steps, and discover peace within change.

I have navigated with my clients through a range of issues including post-traumatic-stress-disorder, sexual assault and abuse, anxiety, gender identity, relationship concerns, mood disorders, and religious faith crises.
As your therapist, I will explore your concerns and assist you in uncovering deeper issues that might be hindering or influencing your relationships and your worldview. “Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation.” -- Dr. Viktor Frankl, Holocaust survivor, existentialist, and founder of Logotherapy (concept based on the premise that the primary motivational force of an individual is to find a meaning in life).

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
