I offer individual and group grief counseling to grievers. As a suicide-bereaved mother myself, I offer traumatic grief counseling to parents and other grievers. Because child loss can be so isolating, bereaved parents often find companionship in a group to be a comfort on this difficult lifelong path. While religious/spiritual notions can be a support, often they are not. As people of conscience, we can lean into what comforts and release what is no longer helpful; sometimes clients grapple with their changing beliefs in sessions. Traumatic grief often leads to changes in beliefs and I companion that exploration. I am a humanist.
Our grief & death-averse culture leaves grievers feeling isolated, lonely. In my practice, grievers can gather together, witness and acknowledge each other. Moms in group talk about their deceased children; share painful judgements/expectations from community, family & friends. Members respect each other's worldview and experience. Zero judgement or advice.
My education and my child loss qualify me to companion bereaved parents. Society wants us to be done grieving now and to mask our true experience. But, grievers can and must trust their own broken hearts to lead the way. I rarely advise: instead, I companion, support, acknowledge. Paradoxically: strength comes from vulnerability, comfort from truth-telling.
