Whether you’re looking to heal wounds, understand your role in the world, or develop practices to support a lifetime of wellbeing, I offer a non-judgemental space to explore what it means to be you in a complex world. We will not only examine the broader systems and dynamics that have informed your life story, but work together to explore your sense of self, obtain clarity about how you got here, and develop a pathway to healing and acceptance. Drawing from research on neuroscience and mindfulness, I will help you increase attunement with your body and its unique safety signals.

We can sometimes feel that we are getting in our own way. Often unconscious patterns that may have served us earlier in life become frustrating, problematic, and uncomfortable. We may find these patterns interfering with relationships, intimacy, work, physical health, a sense of purpose, creativity, connection with self, intuition, efficacy, and self-confidence. We may find that we are living in removed or automated ways, distanced from life. We may neglect or abandon ourselves, over-expand or limit ourselves. When these ways of being become challenging can be an opportune time to engage in counseling.

I offer a welcoming space to explore how disorienting transitions, loss, intense challenges and illnesses can hold within them the possibility for profound personal transformation, renewed vitality, and deeper connections. It was my own journey with chronic illness that began in my twenties that evolved into a calling to support others in their healing. Since 2008, I have worked as a licensed naturopathic physician, health coach, author, educator, and now mental health counselor. My personal and professional experiences have engendered an embodied compassion and humility for the ways in which life can bring us to our knees.

We all have complex stories, and often traumatic experiences in our past become so tangled up in our present day identity and rhythms that it's hard to move forward towards the people and things we care about most. The complexity of these difficult experiences can often have a negative impact on how we feel, live, and imagine our future. But therapy can offer a landing place to pause and reflect on our stories through a new and curious lens. Untangling the threads of your past and present life, and offering yourself empathy and kindness towards your future can provide a new way forward of empowerment, courage, and creativity.

You are not broken and the circumstances of your life hold potential for great healing, no matter how confusing they may seem. I support people and couples who are looking to grow beyond stuckness and repetitive habit and become more alive and honest. I believe most people struggle under the weight of systems that capitalize, and so we will not pathologize exhaustion, disappointment, fear or grief. We will lean into your inherent strengths and gifts, and work to strengthen your community connections. I am a collapse-aware therapist and welcome people looking for this kind of support in these times.

Simply put, being human is hard. When we experience loneliness, depression, fear, or disconnection, our relationships to others and to our true selves can become closed off, leaving us feeling isolated and in pain. In those moments of hardship there is immense power and courage in reaching out. Therapy can be a safe haven to process past experiences that have caused harm, address relationships that are in crisis, and find a way to reconcile loss. We can also use counseling to explore your values and how your life is lining up with those values, or missing the mark.

You're on-edge and having trouble concentrating. You feel restless and unable to stop overthinking. Maybe you're wanting to isolate to protect your friends and family from your sadness and anger. It's hard to continue pretending that everything is fine when you are feeling so desperate inside. You want to feel heard, seen, and understood. You would love to figure out your anxiety or depression—where it might be coming from and how to make it stop (or at least not be so intense).

Therapy is a gift. Its power is rooted in our ancestry, biology, and deep capacities to relate to one another. It isn't something scientists devised in a laboratory. It's a natural process we each have the right to enjoy by simple virtue of being human.

Perhaps everything seems fine on the outside to others…you are able to do what you need to do (on most days), but on the inside you feel overwhelmed, worried, and tired. Perhaps you oscillate between thinking over and over about things, your relationships, what’s next in life...to just shutting down and feeling sad or numb. Some days you don’t even know what’s wrong, it may seem like a lot of little things, and there may be so many opinions inside your head that you can’t even hear your own anymore. Do you wish that you knew how to listen to yourself and trust what you hear?

I'm glad you are looking into counseling, it can take awhile to find the right therapist but its worth it. Are you struggling to balance your responsibilities and still find joy? Are depression, anxiety, the past, and or the future all getting in the way of you living the life you want in this present moment? Otherwise know as the human condition. We all have times when we need to explore and shift patterns and perspectives, and therapy is a great way to make these changes.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Bellingham?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
