Our early environment teaches us how to interact with ourselves and others during times of security, as well as moments of vulnerability or overwhelm. Our work together will help you to understand the dynamics under which your sense of self developed, and the relational skills you learned that may or may not be adaptive to your present relationships. Together, we will work to loosen these entrenched patterns to help you rediscover your sense of agency.

Skilled therapy is a collaborative process between client and therapist in which we identify individual strengths and skills, as well as the challenges that bring the client to therapy. My approach is an integration of support, respect, and sometimes challenging feedback towards personal growth, balanced living, improved relationships, and emotional stability. Areas of focus in my practice for improving psychological well-being include self-esteem challenges, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, mid-life transitions, grief and loss, codependency, and stress management.

I believe it is possible to experience peace in any of life’s circumstances. One thing that comes between us and this peace, however, is our thoughts - without intentional direction for our thoughts, we tend to fixate on our fears, anxieties, and doubts. When this happens, we turn inward and lose connection with what we believe in and the people around us. As your counselor, I aim to guide you to a deeper understanding and validation of your current experience while empowering you to refocus your attention on what is true and life-giving, reestablishing a calming connection with your values, beliefs, and loved ones.

Deciding to participate in mental health care is an important decision. Thank you for taking time to consider if I may be the right fit for your counseling or testing needs. My practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues for adolescents, young adults and older adults. One of the principles that guides my work is treating each person with dignity and respect. The challenges that we face in life can cause us to lose perspective of our priorities which can lead to emotional, behavioral and cognitive imbalance as well as burnout.

I work from a person center perspective, meaning I follow my clients' lead and assist them in their therapeutic goals. We all want to feel connected is an innate human desire. After COVID, many people (me included) felt isolated and lost in today's world. Anxiety, Depression, and fear of the unknown made us as humans look inwards to our upbringing, communities, and lodging for more. I focus on providing a safe, warm, and inviting environment for individuals, couples, and families to explore their hopes, dreams, and fears to increase our connections with ourselves and the essential people in our lives.

Life is a beautiful thing until one day you wake up to a nightmare. Feeling anger, anxious, betrayal, broken, defeated, loss, pain, or overwhelmed; unsure how to express your emotions or continue to live. Tired of hearing you are strong when in all actuality you feel yourself suffocating. I have been there and it is valid if you are too. A wise man once told me attack life's trials one nano second at a time and allow no one to take you out of your happy bubble. It's not the misery we face but the steps we take to overcoming those adversities to embrace your greatness. Healing is forever time to be free ReNana Your HeArt with me!

Accepting new clients! At some point in our lives, we recognize that what they’re doing isn’t working. We wake up and realize this isn’t the life we want to live. We don’t want to keep existing with so much stress, anxiety, anger, or isolation and crave connection, acceptance, and genuine happiness. We want things to be different, but don’t know how or where to start. I work with people who want to redefine their lives and reduce suffering, and help them get there. I work with individuals, couples, and those looking to integrate past psychedelic experiences to create lasting, positive change.

I believe that therapy can benefit all of us. It helps to reduce stress and can improve our overall quality of life. If you are experiencing difficulties with mood, anxiety, anger, trauma or grief, I may be able help. In my experience, the most important aspect of therapy is the building of rapport between you and your therapist. With this in mind, I focus first on listening, being curious and respecting the fact that the people who I work with are the experts on their own lives. With a foundation of understanding then in place, we can work on achieving your individual goals.

Circumstances in life can sometimes be heavy, but you don’t have to hold them alone. Perhaps you are struggling to tune into your emotions and you feel disconnected from yourself. Maybe you are finding it difficult to identify your needs and honor them in a way that feels genuine. You may even be trying to pick up the pieces after a life event and feel stuck in the process. Whatever it is that you’re facing at this time, I'm glad you found your way here.

As human beings, we want healthy and happy relationships. These are vital to our emotional and mental well-being. We want to be our honest, authentic selves and trust that others will be there for us. However, despite our best efforts, things can get in the way. Our emotions, our past, anxiety and depression all affect how we interact with people we care about. Counseling allows for you to sit with someone who has no judgement toward you and your circumstances. I am simply here to help.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Spokane?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
