Hello! Thanks for checking out my page. I have over 20 years experience and offer both in-person therapy in Spokane, WA, and telehealth throughout Washington state. You might be like most of my clients - a normally well adjusted, intelligent person, struggling with anxiety or depression. For people like you, counseling really works. If you try counseling, you will know if its working within the first 3-5 sessions. Some people need just a handful of sessions to get back to their old selves, others choose to stay involved to deepen their growth. Whichever you choose is up to you, but taking the first step is most important.

Lately, life feels like an endless grind. You have lots of responsibilities and you don't see them vanishing anytime soon. You can identify with some or all of these feelings – depressed, anxious, emotionally volatile, flat, heavy, exhausted, nervous, depleted, unmotivated. It’s likely that you’ve tried a number of different things to help yourself – self-help books, “wellness” podcasts, yoga, medication, even therapy. While these things may have helped somewhat, you still find yourself struggling to feel joy, ease and contentment on a consistent basis. In fact, you hate to admit it but hopelessness is a familiar friend.

These days, it can feel like life is moving too fast for us to keep up. This is made all the more challenging when we struggle with such things as unhealthy relationships, intense negative feelings, poor self-image, or trauma. You may worry that getting help means enduring an uncomfortable process that may not result in any notable change. I believe that therapy does not have to be painful to be successful, that it can be infused with moments of laughter and insight. It is about determining why we are stuck as well as figuring out how to create and maintain practical positive changes.

By addressing troubling thoughts and feelings, self-sabotaging behaviors, and traumas, life can be made more manageable, productive, and fulfilling. Feelings such as grief, shame, anxiety, sadness, and anger often signal that something needs to change. Listening to and working with these feelings—some that consume us and others that gently nudge us—can move us forward. Through this, we sometimes discover that our everyday dilemmas are part of larger patterns waiting to be resolved as a whole.

I have experience working with trauma, anxiety, eating disorders, anger, addiction, insecurities, thought disorders, relationship challenges, and depression.
Life is full of complexities. The most powerful thing that we can tap into is living a heart-centered life, learning about our own inner guidance. There are many internal and external barriers that get in the way of this. We do not have to navigate these things alone.

Everyone needs a safe place to express their thoughts, feelings, hopes and fears. Sometimes that means seeking out a professional. Someone who can listen, support, and assist in helping to overcome obstacles or reduce emotional pain. This is my ultimate goal for everyone with whom I work. I have been working in the field of counseling for 18 years and have experience working with a wide variety of individuals. Some need help adjusting to a life change. Others have experienced significant trauma or struggle with suicidal thoughts. Mostly, I am here to meet you where you are at and to help you reach your goals.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
