Waitlist for new clients
I understand many clients come to therapy for the first time full of anxiety as they are wary of talking to a stranger about personal issues. I am often told by clients that I make them feel comfortable and relaxed, and by the end of the first visit they often feel a sense of relief and hope. I work with clients who suffer from depression, anxiety, anger, substance abuse, and other issues that deter them from living life to the fullest. I can help you understand what's happening and offer assistance to cope with these feelings while working on ways to feel better.

I have over 20 years of experience as a therapist, working with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma; and stressors related to related difficult life transitions, unhealthy relationships, and family conflict. I believe a productive therapeutic experience should focus less on the bad choices you have made in your life and more on the right choices you decide to make going forward. Your past is important but not as important as your future. You will leave therapy, empowered with new tools and feeling confident about the new direction of your life.

Society bombards us with expectations of how we should look, act, and feel in order to belong. We endlessly search for the next diet, workout routine, relationship, promotion, house, car, etc to fill this emptiness inside that's saying, "I'm not enough". We feel distant from our emotions, our bodies, and our true selves in this pursuit of external validation. This "not enough" feeling sits deeply below protective patterns that might appear as an eating disorder, body shame, substance abuse, toxic relationships, anxiety, depression, OCD, etc.

Traits of depression, anxiety, panic, avoidance, resistance, and unhappiness are not our best.
Hi. I'm Lisa Smith, a Clinical Social Worker. I like our therapy to be a time of creating what next steps you are willing to try. Together we think of the barrier. I act as a coach for accountability with awareness of any diagnosis or past struggles you've had. I highlight your strengths and together we celebrate victories. The therapy I use is research-based. I'll show you the logic and ease of following incremental steps. I will share the traits of your personality or diagnosis that are working for or hindering progress. When plans don't work, we begin again.

In addition to specializing couples counseling and adults, my expertise is in therapy with adolescents (14+) and families. I use research-based therapies that offer practical methods and skills that build emotional flexibility, self-awareness and resilience. Many of my clients are working to become free of self-defeating patterns resulting from emotional neglect in early or adolescent development. Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
