Life can be difficult sometimes for teens, adults, and parents. Childhood trauma, breaking generational cycles, or sudden life events can make us feel alone and unable to face our fears. This emotional pain can bring symptoms of depression and anxiety, cause a change in behavior and sleep or cause family conflict. You may ask yourself why did this happen to me? Or will I ever feel like myself? It all can feel overwhelming! As your therapist, I will walk with you as you process these changes to heal, grow, and empower yourself.

John Lennon nailed it: "Life is what happens when we are busy making other plans." Without warning we my find ourselves dealing with the loss of a relationship, a job, or a difficult diagnosis. Perhaps parenting, which used to be so easy, does not seem to be working. For others, years of carrying so much anxiety and stress has now become too heavy and is getting in the way. Possibly life itself has turned upside down, magnifying everything else to the point that it is just overwhelming. I get it and can offer support, skills and a path towards reclaiming your well-being and a life worth living.

Throughout my work, it has become clear that the mind is amazing at convincing us of our worst fears and we can often turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms that may heighten already negative feelings. These experiences can be intense and opening up can bring its own set of challenges. It has been a real privilege to support people in navigating their emotional experiences relating to anxiety, depression, interpersonal relationships, and trauma. I take a mindful approach to my practice and place significant emphasis on the relationship we build.

I have extensive experience working with adolescents, families, and adults who struggle with eating, substance use, mood, and anxiety disorders.
Sometimes our lives get to a point where we're just surviving, rather than thriving. In survival mode, we cope the best we can - this may mean using disordered eating behaviors, self-harm, substance use, self-criticizing inner talk, or self-destruction. I'm here to help guide you out of survival mode and into your best life. In therapy, we'll explore how you're surviving and how you can thrive. We'll identify changes you want and I will offer suggestions to help you create these changes. We will balance this change with lots of self-compassion.

Many people seek out therapy for different reasons sometimes for loss, trauma, life transitions, anxiety and depression, feeling stuck in life, and sometimes for help adding coping skills for day to day life. My approach to therapy is mainly rooted in CBT and Mindfulness, working with you to examine how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected and how by navigating through changes in our lives with a more present and focus lens we can minimize anxiety and add to our coping skills toolbox. By taking a mindfulness approach, we will find ways to navigate through past experiences and the curve balls life throws at us.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
