Perhaps you're going through a transition or quarter life crisis and trying to cope with hard things that have happened in your life. You have tried everything you can think of to try to feel better and it is just not working. Are you overwhelmed and feeling stuck? Does your mind race? Are anxiety and sadness causing you to lose sleep and feel unmotivated? You may be saying to yourself "something has to change" but feel unsure of what to do. Some days you find it hard to function. Your relationships may suffer. And you long for healthier ways to cope with life.

My clients often experience challenges following traumatic experiences or struggle with anxiety, depression, life transitions, and attachment.
Knowing how to support your child or adolescent when difficulties arise can feel overwhelming and daunting. Stressful life experiences and trauma can compound those feelings. Counseling can help children and their parents process these experiences and learn new ways to cope.

I have experience working with individuals who are dealing with a variety of issues, such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, body image, self-worth, communication difficulties, boundary setting as well as other struggles.
Hi, I'm Alaina! It can feel overwhelming to make decisions and move forward in life when circumstance or emotion has us feeling stuck. It may feel difficult to be confident in your decisions when self-doubt, anxiety, negative thoughts, and discontentment are around. We can get stuck in patterns, sometimes unconsciously, due to comfortability and the overwhelming feelings that may come along with making a change. Change can happen in a way that comes with more ease by gaining new skills and knowledge that serve you moving forward. Lets figure out a way to help you feel centered, find balance and find more fulfillment in life.

I work with individuals and couples and specialize in issues related to relationships, self-esteem, and anxiety.
I have experienced the healing that comes from having the space to explore, grow, and understand new parts of yourself, while also being held and accepted for exactly who you are right now. This doesn’t mean that I won’t challenge you to grow and adapt at times, but my hope is that you will also know you are fully accepted just as you are. I believe that a therapeutic relationship based on trust and collaboration is the foundation of this work and that counseling can not, and should not, look the same for everybody. In my practice, I structure the therapy around you, your needs, and identities.

Emotions can really suck and as we age we grow to have difficulty expressing and feeling them. An "affect phobia." In other words, we develop difficulty interacting, expressing, and feeling our emotions. This presents in a number of different methods; laughing when uncomfortable, lack of eye contact, verbal outbursts, restlessness, and many other ways. I help patients recognize the means used to relate to themselves and others to experience feelings and resolve unconscious conflicts. The goal being an elimination of depression, anxiety, and trauma responses in the shortest time possible.

I have 12 years experience working with anxiety, depression and PTSD in women and veterans.
I believe in working cooperatively with people to help them achieve balance, personal growth, and to reach their personal goals. Many people feel isolated and their anxiety or depression prevent them from being their best self. We all have the ability to learn, grow and reach our highest potential, and we cannot do it alone. Together we can identify strengths, work through challenges, and develop the skills to achieve a higher level of peace and contentment.

Do you feel like you’re not good enough? Do you wonder why you feel this way? Does this effect your relationships and quality of life? It can be overwhelming, and it’s common for people to struggle with these kinds of thoughts and feelings. The trouble is, it can get in the way of achieving meaningful goals in our lives. Many people choose to avoid these thoughts and feelings which can lead to unfulfilling relationships, unrewarding careers and other mental health problems such as anxiety or depression. It’s exhausting trying to live up to an unattainable standard, right?

We may have all asked ourselves at one time or another...."How did I (or we) get here?"... During these times, talking to someone who understands helps. I believe that it takes courage and strength to seek change. It is through this change that we begin to feel better not only about ourselves, but about our life circumstances. I always feel honored that clients trust me enough to share their stories. Much of my work has been dedicated to helping those who are struggling with depression or experiencing anxiety. I will do my best to help you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Life is an adventure. Sometimes there are high mountains to climb, rough waters swim, or dragons to tame, but you don’t have to face them alone. I’m here because I know what it’s like to feel like you’re drowning. My goal as a therapist is to provide a place where people can step out of the storm and breathe. Working with teens and adults, I use trauma-informed and a harm reduction framework, at a client led pace. This means I will not expect you to “dive right in” and share your deepest fears or darkest secrets minutes after meeting me. There’s no pressure here. Whatever your focus is, that is where we will start.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
