I view being a Psychotherapist as being more than simply a job, I view it as a vocation. I have worked in both residential and outpatient settings. I help individuals with symptoms and behaviors arising from anxiety, depression, psychosis, obsessions & compulsions, traumatic experiences, addictions, Personality Disorders, low self-esteem, and anger. I also help individuals cope with daily problems or stress in order to lead more productive lives. I am licensed to treat Mental Health issues, as well as Chemical Dependency issues, in the states of Nebraska & Iowa. I am currently accepting new patients (for in-office visits only).

I have extensive education and training in trauma as well as working with individuals who are having challenges with anxiety and depression.
I often find myself telling people, "Life happens, but what matters most is what you do about it". We all have experienced, at one time or another, a situation that has us needing to take a breath. Anxiety, depression, trauma and loss/grief are just a few things that I can help you work through by providing a safe space for self reflection and discovery. This is your life and I am simply here to help you and your family discover what works for you!

I believe humor belongs in therapy, laughter can open the door to calming anxiety and nervousness.
“A step may be the beginning of a great journey” In life the first step is always the most difficult for people, the same can be said about therapy. Introducing oneself to someone they just met, trusting a stranger with their thoughts and feelings can be a truly intimidating experience. The purpose of therapy is to provide a safe space for a person to take the first step on the journey of healing and the personal growth that follows. Therapy is fluidic and follows an integrative, and adaptable path determined by the client’s goals.

I've been told that my calm and accepting style is particularly helpful with anxious, depressed, and grieving clients.
I believe empathy, collaboration, and motivation are vital in counseling. As a clinician, I want to learn about what has gotten you to this point. I offer a safe, nonjudgmental environment to help facilitate this. I am particularly interested in your strengths, resources, past efforts, and goals including what you feel can and can't be done. I believe most problems stem from suppressed emotions, interpersonal difficulties, environmental stressors, or distorted beliefs and assumptions. Together, we will work to select the most effective course to achieve changes you want and need.

I work with clients struggling with a variety of issues, including Anxiety/Panic, ADHD, Depression, Grief, Life Transitions, Chronic Pain, Mood Disturbance, Self-Care, and many more. However, I am currently only accepting adults with ADHD or suspected ADHD as new clients. Therapy tends to work best when a client provides as much information as possible, is open and honest, and puts in the effort and work necessary to improve upon their life.

My counseling experience ranges from treating adults who struggle with substance abuse and mental health struggles, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, grief, and trauma.
Pura Vida! My name is Lisa Dunlavy, MSW, LCSW, LIMHP. Wellness refers to our overall balance of our physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, environmental and occupational well-being. Life stressors and mental health struggles can create imbalances in our well-being, but together we can create goals to address these imbalances and assist in making positive change, self-growth, and to learn how to live in the moment. Additionally, I am a Veteran of the United States Air Force (USAF). My perspective as a Veteran allows me to not only be an advocate, but a provider to those who have served.

Life is challenging. There are times when life can get the best of you. You find yourself having a hard time doing normal life routines such as getting out of bed or brushing your teeth. You seem to dread each day because of the constant reminder of feeling stuck, lost, and hopeless. You considered taking back your life but don’t know where to begin.

I specialize in anxiety.
Modern life is stressful. We often feel like we don't have enough time, enough money, enough energy, or enough confidence in ourselves. We spend too much time feeling anxious or depleted. There is an alternative to the constant, unrelenting treadmill and chaos. There is another way of being present in your life and available to those you love. I practice Mindfulness-Based Psychology and Mindful Self-Compassion. By learning these skills, you can begin to slow down, befriend yourself, and make choices that reflect and further your values and dreams, rather than those imposed on you.

Does it seem like your depression will never go away? Perhaps you struggle with stress and anxiety. Many people I work with have previously felt stuck when it came to relationships, whether that was with their significant other, children, colleagues, or friendships. At other times, they’re dealing with divorce or loss. These problems can lead to or complicate mental health conditions. While it’s normal to have challenges from time to time, symptoms shouldn’t interfere with your daily experiences and enjoyment of life. Sometimes, it takes an outside person to help you get to a place of more peace and happiness.

I have experience in helping clients with depression, suicidal ideation, major mental health disorders, anxiety, relationship issues, family conflicts, to name a few.
With so many challenges that we face in life today, it can be easy to feel stuck. Finding peace may seem far out of reach. However, I believe that you are the expert of your story and that you have many strengths that will assist you in overcoming the trials of life. Therapy is a collaborative process, in which the therapist and client work together, building skills and working through issues, large or small.

My passion is helping preteens through adults navigate through a variety of struggles including anxiety, depression, body image, self-esteem, and eating disorders! I also utilize various modalities including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

Therapy should be a safe place where you can be yourself without judgement, and I strive to provide that environment for all of my clients. I use a person-centered approach and meet clients where they are at and help them grow to achieve their goals.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
