Anxiety and depression can rob an individual from feeling like themselves. When we are in a dark place in our life it can become hard to open up to others and find the light that we are so desperately seeking. Often the goal becomes finding ways to cope effectively, especially when it comes to loss, trauma and grief. The biggest question becomes, "How do I get better?" You took the first step in asking for help! The rest will follow.

Are you looking for someone to help you with your anxiety, depression or mood disorder? I see individuals, adolescents and couples. I take an evidence based approach to therapy combining Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I want to help you determine what you’re doing that already works and support you as you work towards your own goals. Most people see an alleviation of symptoms within a few months of seeing me.

We are all human, we all experience fear, shame, guilt, anxiety, sadness, and anger.
I am EMDR certified. We've all experienced ups and downs, of life, as the ocean we navigate through ebbs and flows. We may be in the same ocean of chaos around us, but out boats are all crafted differently. Some surf through waves in their expensive, privileged Yachts, and some of us are barely keeping afloat in our tattered paddle boats. No matter your type of boat, we all get tossed into the water from time to time. Don't let the waves flood you. Learn to keep your head above the waves, and eventually build up ability to surf over those rough waves with confidence.

The things most important to me when developing a therapeutic relationship are safety, transparency, and feeling heard. It can be difficult to open up and share with someone the events of our lives that are difficult to process, that is why I strive to create a genuine, non-judgmental and dynamic space.

Peace. I know how important it is to create a safe space for you to talk about your struggles. Whether the discussion is about your sexuality, especially if you are part of the LGBTQ+ community, your mood, your past including traumatic experiences and upcoming life transitions, therapy and the process of collaborative learning about you is my goal. My work experiences in hospital settings, college counseling settings, community mental health and private practice in both Saudi Arabia and the U.S. have taught me to integrate what I have learned about education, advocacy, and treatment into my therapeutic approach.

I've been a social worker in Southern Indiana for nearly 40 years. I have experience with a wide variety of issues, including major mental illness, but now I'm mostly dealing with depression, anxiety, addictions, couples counseling and issues of aging. My work comes out of CBT and is focused on the here and now. My goal is for you to have more control regulating your emotions. Emotions have a lot of energy, it is time that energy gets used to help you rather than hurt you. I've always worked in Southern Indiana, which is where I'm from. I worked for 20 years at Indiana University CAPS before retiring to pursue private practice.

I work with kids and adults from all over the world, and use an integrative approach to counseling, as I don't believe that one-size-fits-all in therapy. I am passionate about helping expat adults and third culture kids (TCK's) as they live in new cultures and navigate all that entails. I also enjoy working with international clients, specifically Arab clients, and have a good understanding of the culture and traditions. I am EMDR Trained (Level 2), trauma informed, adoption informed, I coach parents of kids with an FASD and use mindfulness, self-compassion, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT & REBT), and person-centered approaches.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
