I also use EMDR and CBT to address anxiety and trauma.
Healing and growth takes place in the context of relationships - both in our relationship with ourselves, and in our relationships with others. Unfortunately, sometimes our relationships become distant, disconnected and a place of conflict, leaving us with unmet needs and just feeling “stuck.” We don’t feel safe asking for what we need, and maybe don’t even know what we need ourselves. The therapeutic relationship in counseling provides an authentic and safe place in which healing can begin to take place.

By learning how to calm anxiety, research shows that the body is less stressed and can manage the physical ailment more successfully.
I help insightful people who are motivated and ready to make changes. I value listening to your "starting point" as you enter therapy. From there, we will build a dialogue that expands your awareness and choices of what else is possible for you in a given situation or relationship. My ideal clients are willing to practice new skills that may energize their communication and feel aligned with their true self.

Each of us has the ability to impact the world in a unique and powerful way and we are all born with the desire to deeply connect with others. Struggles with anxiety, depression, insecurity, burnout and stress can discourage us and keep us from realizing our full potential. Counseling gives you the opportunity to feel seen, heard and understood as well as challenged. It is through therapy that we come to understand ourselves more fully allowing personal growth, self esteem and possibly true satisfaction with the life we are given.

I believe humans are beautifully complex beings with a mind, body, and spirit - to isolate healing to only one of these areas is to significantly limit potential growth. Are you experiencing anxiety that has not dissipated no matter how well you try to take care of yourself? Are you noticing that your relationships and career are not where you want them to be, but are struggling to know where to start to make changes? Maybe you are curious about how past challenges and trauma could be impacting you now, and want to break free from the hold that the past seems to have on you.

I enjoy working with individuals hoping to address relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, disordered eating, body image, trauma, shame, and life transitions.
I view therapy as a collaborative, interactive process that can create change and promote repair. I enjoy helping individuals understand the themes that echo through their lives, broaden their sense of self, build emotional flexibility, and develop meaningful relationships. I work to foster curiosity and empower individuals to develop authenticity, autonomy, and self-compassion. I also strive to playfully challenge unproductive beliefs and explore the function of behaviors. I received my master's degree in 2009 and PsyD in 2012 from the University of Denver.

I have extensive training and experience helping clients who are dealing with relationship/intimacy issues; addictions; depression and anxiety; grief and loss; communication difficulties; trauma and PTSD; child/adolescent issues and divorce.
With 25 years in clinical practice, I am a firm believer in the effectiveness of psychotherapy to improve self confidence and self esteem, to develop more fulfilling relationships and to set one's life course in a positive direction for the future. I try to not only help my clients find relief from bothersome symptoms but also to help get to the root of the problem that has brought them into therapy. In this way the therapy has a deeper and longer-lasting effect as clients learn how to free themselves from problematic patterns from the past and live more fully in the present.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
