Do you find yourself shut down, unsure of why you are responding the way you are, suppressing your feelings or feeling like you feel too "much"? Do you struggle in relationships, life or day to day living due to your trauma? Are you unsure of where you belong? I work with people in all walks of life to process unresolved feelings due to trauma. I strive to provide a safe and non judgmental space, in order for you to develop coping mechanisms for trauma symptoms ( anxiety, depression, addiction, etc) and to explore aspects of yourself. I would love to sit down with you and hold space for you as you navigate your journey to healing.

Self-esteem, self-control, grief, loss, anxiety, depression, bipolar, or other mental health problems transfer to all areas of life.
I specialize in children, adolescents and their families. Conflicts within the home, school, or work place contribute to added stress, anxiety, depression and addictive behaviors. Problems adjusting to new family dynamics can be expressed by irritability, anger, or withdrawal. I will work with you to improve relationships between siblings, between children and parents, or between friends and colleagues. If your family is struggling with possible addictions and related issues, I have experience that may help. When you leave the first session, you will have some coping strategies to improve your situation. Take some positive steps towards a better future today.

I have an extensive understanding of how trauma affects our ability to cope with even the smallest inconveniences as well as how depression and anxiety tend to make us turn to self-medicating substances.
Have you tried everything to make your life better and it doesn't seem to work, or it works for a short time and things go right back to the way they were? Have you used alcohol or drugs to medicate uncomfortable feelings to feel normal, but never really feel normal no matter how hard you try? When we have suffered life-altering disappointments we tend to feel that we are different from others. When we try to connect with others, sometimes it doesn't work out as we anticipated. These disappointments can make us feel there is no hope for us.

I work with people who struggle with substance use and trauma, stress and depression, helping clients to get unstuck from old patterns that cause unhappiness. My experience has been that clients find the right answers and resolve their own issues, once they are able to talk through their struggles and look at them in a different way. My clients may struggle with addiction, anxiety, or trauma - we work for them to be able to "get out of the rut" they've been stuck in. I like to have a good feel for my clients' lives and emotions, and that only comes from really being present, so I work almost exclusively face-to-face.

Great news! I can now be contacted not only at Sondermind but Headway too. All of these problems can change with specialized approaches. It's hard to believe that I've been working as a social worker for 27 years. I still enjoy my work today as I did 27 years ago. I feel I love it so much because everyone is different. I also love to see people have the best life they can. You can change the way you think and how you feel by learning and using new coping skills. I focus on adults with depression, trauma, anxiety or addictions using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Behavior Modification and Person Centered Therapy.

For the past 20 years, I have been a successful clinician in the areas of relationships, trauma, anxiety, depression, codependency, family of origin issues, substance abuse and couple challenges. Working on change is difficult and I'm here to help facilitate each client to become their authentic self. I am licensed in two states (California and Colorado) and can meet in person or via teletherapy, depending on where you live. With trauma work, however, meeting in person is the only choice I offer.

Distressing symptoms in the present often are from situations in the past which when addressed people report feeling free in the present to become their authentic selves and accomplish their goals. I wanted to become better prepared and so studied beyond basic EMDR training to become a Certified EMDR Therapist with the International Association (EMDRIA). Primarily I work with veterans, adults, young adults and seniors that struggle with past unresolved trauma or distress, PTSD, over reactions, anger, depression, anxiety and fear, impulsivity, low self esteem and confidence, emotional mood swings, as well as aging issues.

I enjoy working with clients from the age of 6/7 to geriatric who are dealing with Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, PTSD, Mood, and Personality Disorders, and other outlining mental health and substance abuse conditions.
Every day, people go through hard times, breakups, divorces, grief, and the loss of a friend, animal, or loved one, the loss of a job, etc, and we all need help from an unbiased person for aid and support in these and other areas of concern. When it comes to Trauma, I believe it is an exciting part of life; one is not expecting it, and you barely understand it. Now you can deal with and overcome it in a healthy and professional way. Along with other mental health issues, I have experienced enough trauma, grief and loss, sadness, depression, and substance use to last a lifetime, from childhood mistakes to adult issues and I can help.

I see therapy as a partnership; you are the expert on your thoughts, feelings, and past experiences, and I am the guide who helps reframe and challenge certain lenses you might be using to view a situation or part of yourself. One of my primary specialties is working with those who are struggling with their use of substances. Another area of passion for me is assisting those who are experiencing anxiety, depression, or who are having difficulty moving on from a past event. A third focus in my practice is working with the experiences of those in the LGBTQ+ community.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
