My name is Jonathan Gears, and I work with teenagers and adults who are struggling with adjusting to their current life circumstances. With the mounting pressures of school, work, family issues, health, finances, and relationships, it is no surprise that depression, anxiety, stress, and several other mental health issues can set in. If you are feeling lost during this phase of life, you are not alone. It will get better; you will find yourself again, and therapy might be a part of that journey. I want to help you feel more confident facing life's challenges as soon as possible.

My passion lies in helping those who seek calm to find it. My clients typically come to me with anxiety, self-doubt, feelings of being overwhelmed, at times socially isolating. They want to feel better, sleep better, be fulfilled and connected but find themselves with busy minds, an inability to relax, and strained interactions. I offer listening to understand, nurturance to support self-compassion, and exploration of the root of the emotional distress. It is often times the result of chronic trauma, disappointing relationships, and a tendency towards perfectionism.

Depression, anxiety, fertility issues, parenting, relationships–these are a few of my specialty areas.
Hello! As a licensed professional counselor, we’ll work together to find an inner sense of balance in your life. Sometimes, that looks like practicing mindfulness or utilizing somatic tools to manage challenging internal states–anxiety, depression, grief or sadness. Other times, that may look like exploring the intricacies of a difficult situation or relationship. Ultimately, the goal is to come back to a sense of joy.

I bring experience and enthusiasm to my work with people struggling with substance abuse, addiction, depression, and anxiety. My emphasis is not only on the immediate needs of getting sober but the long-term process of learning to live life in a joyous and clear way. I utilize many techniques to achieve this, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), skill-building, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness based practices. A whole-person approach is incorporated utilizing resources such as nutrition, physical growth, and mindfulness-based modalities. My therapeutic style is both collaborative and supportive.

Their issues may vary widely, ranging from managing stress, anxiety, or depression to coping with past trauma or navigating challenging life transitions. Despite the specific nature of their struggles, they share a common desire for relief, understanding, and resilience.

Change, in all its forms—be it battling depression, managing anxiety, or nurturing healthier relationships—demands a compassionate yet strategic approach.
Why is change so hard, especially in the world of addiction? This question resonates deeply with many of us, tapping into the universal struggle of transforming our lives for the better. With over a decade of dedicated service in the mental health field, I've cultivated an understanding of the intricate work between desire and action, particularly in overcoming addiction. As a certified addictions counselor, my expertise lies in navigating the treacherous waters of change, guiding individuals through the tumultuous journey from dependency to freedom. But addiction is not the sole focus of my practice.

In this age of narcissism and self-discovery, many are feeling isolated and alienated from others, causing us to reassess our relationships and personal choices. Many are disillusioned, anxious and depressed due to unwanted life experiences that threaten our sense of security and block our path to happiness. During this time of cultural and personal insecurity, some seek a space for guided reflection, discovery and contemplation of possibilities previously unconsidered. I provide services that promote healthy outcomes and empower clients to make authentic, self-directed changes that align with personal needs, values and aspirations.

I have 5 years of experience working with individuals, children, and families suffering from complex trauma related to abuse, neglect, domestic violence, substance use, and mental illness (anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and personality disorders).
I help people struggling in life to create and sustain positive change. I take a judgment free approach and am deeply dedicated to client-centered practices that provide individuals with dignity and self-determination. I will help you identify unconscious core beliefs about yourself, relationships, life, and the things that have happened to you. These beliefs affect your emotions and behaviors and can interfere with your decision making and ability to accomplish your goals.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
