I provide a safe and welcoming environment so you can share your thoughts, fears, grief, etc.
Welcome, I'm Cheryl Polyudhapoom, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Psychotherapist. I've started my own private practice because I’m committed to helping adults learn how to build healthier relationships, be free from trauma, and to overall learn how to manage their mental health. My work focuses on targeting negative behaviors, habits, and thoughts. I believe in utilizing multiple modalities in treatment to help clients reach their goals, but my primary approach in treatment is through the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

My specialties are Trauma, people with Autism & Asperger's, First Responders, Anxiety, Military / Veterans.
I am here for you! We can easily become consumed with negative thinking and/or dysfunctional behaviors. When we don't have specific tools to cope effectively with stress, we can quickly fall into some destructive patterns. Let’s work together and find better ways to respond.

Waitlist for new clients
My specialties include play therapy, anxiety/depression, OCD, grief, adjusting to the perinatal/postpartum period, and parenting.
Therapy with me is a safe space where my clients can press the pause button and reset each week. My clients use our time together to evaluate the direction they are headed and make adjustments necessary to get where they want to be. Although the details of course vary from client to client, I understand from 15+ years working with families in hospitals, schools, and therapy rooms, that this process is only effective when you like your therapist! I am happy to offer 15-30 min Zoom consultations to help assess whether we'd be a good fit.

I love working with adults and teens facing life transitions, interpersonal conflicts, emotional outburst and struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma, shame, and perfectionism.
Do you feel like aspects of your life have been unconsciously avoided but are now seeping through cracks? As a second generation Filipina-American, I view therapy as an opportunity to create a new blueprint on how you want to live your most meaningful life. From navigating my own journey in mental health, I have learned to be grateful for my emotions and to move towards the uncomfortable. I believe building awareness and by simply being curious around the uncomfortable parts of your life may provide an emotional understanding that could help you feel reconnected to your self.

Change is constant. Whether with work, personal relationships, or society in general, everything is always changing, evolving - moving forward. Sometimes the tools or thoughts we use to cope with the ever-changing situations are out dated and leave us feeling frustrated, fearful, or even overwhelmed. In recognizing this, it is time to update our thoughts and coping skills so we can move forward and grow away from fears, low self esteem, or "stuck" feelings. Hypnosis is a safe, effective Holistic tool, with a positive approach to overcoming the fears/challenges holding you back from the success you desire and deserve.

Hi, I'm Helen - a Filipina Asian American therapist. First, I want to acknowledge your decision to start therapy. This decision might come from the realization that "something isn't right". You might be scared, lost, and dealing with a lot of anxiety, sadness, and grief. You may even be struggling secretly. But, you don't have to struggle through this alone. l believe therapy is a brave space to reclaim your identity and begin learning the skills necessary to create a meaningful life. We can work together to help unlearn patterns that don't serve you, to make space for healthy communication and peace.

You feel stuck, like something is wrong and you are not enough. You’re struggling, and you want things to be better, but you don’t know how to get there. You think to yourself you should be able to handle this, and you shouldn’t be feeling this way. You don’t know how to put it into words, or you don’t feel like there’s anyone you can talk to about it with. You want to feel understood, and be listened to without worry of being judged.

It is heartbreaking to be trapped in a lifeless mood or anxiety.
As a contemporary psychoanalyst who specializes in attachments, and how they evolve throughout the lifespan, my focus is on three themes, your emotional life, your relational life, and the skills you will need to make the first two work. How do I do this? Through empathy, imagination, compassion, and collaboration, and humor. I may be an expert on the process of therapy, but you are the authority on your self, as well as your thoughts and feelings on those you love or hope to love. There is one more thing: as a poet, I believe in everyone developing personal passion

I also work a lot with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, and life transitions.
Life can be challenging at times. You may be feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or "stuck". You may find yourself constantly taking care of others, leaving little to no time for yourself. You may be struggling with self-criticism, and wanting to love yourself a bit more. You decide you want a change. The journey to growth and healing takes time and courage, and you do not have to do it alone. As a therapist, I would love to help you to learn skills to cope with difficult emotions, to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your experiences, to recognize your inner strengths, and to discover a sense of fulfillment in your life.

I specialize in working with depression, anxiety, complex trauma, childhood abuse, relational issues, and Asian American/minority issues, including cultural identity, racism, and family conflict.
Individuals raised by immigrant parents have all experienced the cultural and generational gaps growing up. These conflicts can range from daily misunderstandings to complex intergenerational trauma. As a Korean-American, I specialize in supporting young adults and families understand how these conflicts impact their lives and provide a safe space of healing to overcome these difficulties. People who experience these conflicts can sometimes develop issues separating themselves from their inner critic, trusting themselves, feeling stuck in a vicious cycle, a lack of purpose and identity, and a sense of emptiness about the future.

I have experience in couples work, sexual abuse, physical abuse, developmental trauma, sex/love/porn addiction, depression, and anxiety.
Life has a way throwing curve balls. From unexpected challenges to fluctuating deadlines, life sometimes causes us to feel like we are aiming for a moving target. Relationships are guaranteed to have pitfalls that can surprise anyone. Trauma often is the leftover when a home or society is not welcoming, when violence has been perpetrated on you, or when you are faced with overwhelming loss. You will need access to your internal resources when addressing past and present trauma. Living life with a centered mindfulness can help guide you to wholeness.

For comprehensive and evidence-based treatment, I provide culturally sensitive cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based care to address issues including but not limited to depression, anxiety, burnout, life stress, or sleep problems, as well as underlying intergenerational, cultural identity, or acculturation stress.
Stressful life events, endless thoughts in the night, and emotions that seem out of control can be overwhelming and isolating. Exhaustion and mental health stigma can further push quality of life and sense of fulfillment out of reach. As an Asian American psychologist in California, I am passionate about supporting my community through thoughtful counseling that cultivates deeper understanding and healing. I have presented research and workshops on the intersection of mental health and diversity, and have over 8 years of psychotherapy experience focused on building awareness, learning coping skills, and improving quality of life.

I enjoy working with the client's present day experience while bringing in relevant aspects of one's personal history. I work collaboratively with my clients on re-creating a life of healing and fullness. Therapy might mean working through depression and anxiety, significant events in the past, exploring spiritual meanings, all the while exploring the here-and-now. Having had extensive international experiences, I also actively engage in an intercultural frame and approach in therapy, exploring cultural values and intergenerational issues. Wellness is actively defined by the forces and people that has shaped and continues to shape us.

The bulk of my clinical experience has been in working with ethnically and culturally diverse clients with a wide range of mental health issues, couples struggling with communication and/or intimacy, and college students or transitioning adults with anxiety and relationship issues.
I see my role in the therapeutic process as an agent of change and flicker of hope. My only goal is to help you make the necessary changes in your life so that you can experience joy, love, abundance, and meaning. I believe that the only way for any of us to heal and grow from the pains of our experiences is with someone who can not only provide an understanding to what we're going through, but help us experience something different. I seek to achieve this outcome with you through a collaborative relationship and instilling empowerment in you.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
