Emotions and significant life stressors can leave a person feeling stuck or helpless. Finding a safe place to process emotions and address questions of shame, normalcy, and acceptance can be challenging. Without being able to process emotions and trauma, we can get stuck while the emotions stay in our bodies. Processing emotions not only provides mental relief, but can also transform a person’s connectedness to their bodies and relieve some physical manifestations of stressors. I hope to help people find hope which allows space for life to be messy and things to still be okay.

I’ve counseled people in some form or fashion for most of my life. When I was younger, friends came to me with their problems and left our conversation feeling better. Seeing the change in them was moving and made me realize I wanted to do this professionally. However, my journey to becoming a therapist was an unusual one. I was a monk for more than a decade and worked abroad. During that time, I gained a deeper understanding of the human experience and struggle. It shaped me as a therapist and has since helped me identify people’s deeper issues as well as give concrete and practical advice.

You need to feel like you can be fully yourself. To be able to set boundaries, thrive, and be healthy in your relationships. Therapy is for someone like you - a regular person, struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder... who sometimes doesn’t like how you feel about yourself or your relationships. Given the social pressures and systemic influences in your life, these feelings become more complex and painful with time. You don’t need someone to solve everything, fix you, or expect you to be happy, but you long to be authentic and vulnerable with yourself and for others to feel they can be the same with you.

Would it surprise you to know that nearly every client I have ever worked with has asked me the same question? It's true. "Am I crazy?" I tell them all the same thing: "No. Crazy is a feeling--not a diagnosis. You can feel crazy, act crazy, look crazy, do something crazy--but you cannot BE crazy. Maybe you have been wondering if you are crazy? Or if perhaps you are "losing your mind"? I would like to be the therapist who gets to know you, and helps reassure you that you are not crazy or losing your mind, and to help you feel better in general.

Life is hard; no one said it would be easy. Nothing that has value comes easily. It seems the things that can bring us lasting joy are the things we have to work to achieve. We are all unique in history. Where we come from, which family, which culture, impacted who we are and who we will or have become. Yet, all of us are the same in that we need human interaction. We come into this world seeking others, touch, interaction. We are neither meant to be or have to be completely alone. *(I am an approved WA State Supervisor and am currently taking on LMHCA supervisees).

I utilize Motivational Interviewing with a Humanistic/Existential approach as a foundation to my therapy. Which means understanding that a "whole" person is more than the sum of his or her parts. I understand people by examining their interpersonal relationships. That people have many levels of self-awareness, that can be neither ignored nor put into an abstract context. I also believe individuals have free will and are participants rather than observers in their own lives; and that people's lives have purpose, value and meaning. I choose to submerge myself into the world of the person; I am working with.

Often, when we feel blocked by experiencing overwhelming negative thoughts and emotions, it can make one feel trapped with no way out. Anger, frustration, sadness and worry can easily pound down confidence and push away people we care about in our lives. My passion is helping you break free from what I call the "dictatorship" of anxiety, anger, depression, past hurts, and work with you to find your personal strength to start living your life on your terms and strengthen connections with others.

As we venture through life, sometimes we find that the expectations we set for ourselves, our partners, and the future are constantly changing. My hope is to ease you through life’s transitions while enriching the relationships you have. I believe therapy should be a safe, non-judgmental, and nurturing place to put down the weights and ease into meaningful conversations. I enjoy working together with clients to identify their strengths, explore ways to reconnect with themselves and others to move forward in ways that feel genuine.

Our innate human desire and need for love and connection is undeniable. In my work with families, individuals and partners, I encourage my clients to uncover and share feelings that often lie underneath dysfunctional patterns and interactions. This systemic perspective also values reflection on the impact from our families of origin. I also aim to nurture a strong sense of identity and self worth, believing this is imperative in finding balance in our unpredictable, confusing world.

I often notice when we finally find the time to catch a breath we tend to bring awareness to just how shallow our breathing may have been up to that point. Life moves fast and it doesn’t tend to slow down even when we need it the most; it's easy to slip into survival mode. As a therapist, it is my goal to not only guide my clients out of survival mode but help them find a way back to thriving and connection. While I honor the survival skills that got you here, it may be time to consider the possibility of healing. Whether it is PTSD or complex trauma, attachment wounds, depression, anxiety, or grief, I am honored to help.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Puyallup?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
