Congratulations for having the courage to search for help navigating your emotional life. I am a licensed clinical social worker who works with a variety of clients dealing with emotional and relational challenges. Some are dealing with anxiety and depression that they don't completely understand. Others are having relationship problems with a significant other or family members. Many of the clients I work with have addiction issues which serve to temporarily cover up the pain or emptiness they are feeling. Talking to someone can help you get perspective and feel empowered to deal with overwhelming problems and emotions.
I find a trauma-based psychotherapy approach to be the most helpful. All of us have experienced traumas; some more severe than others. I find that EMDR and Internal Family Systems, when used together, can lead to quicker symptom resolution than using traditional talk therapy alone.
Getting into therapy is a vulnerable process. It can be helpful meeting with more than one person in order to find a good fit. It takes time to build trust in any relationship including a therapeutic one.
