Choosing a therapist is a very personal decision. It's important that you feel comfortable. Finding a safe, confidential and collaborative experience in counseling is my goal. When meeting with adult clients I blend a number of treatment approaches in my work, including client centered, motivational interviewing, and solution focused therapies. My clients have described me as compassionate, respectful and supportive, with a good sense of humor. Each person is unique to their own personal experiences in therapy and I adapt my skills to fit your needs.

Do you second-guess your decisions while also dreading the future? Maybe it’s too hard to get going in the morning because you’re not sure what matters anymore. I’m guessing you’ve perhaps tried therapy or other treatments which may have helped temporarily, while your life eventually returned to the status quo. I’ve seen many people suffer for too long unnecessarily. That’s what makes me passionate about providing therapy that really makes a difference. I offer effective treatments for anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief, and more. I also support those in the LGBTQ community, who may deal with these and other challenges.

*Not currently taking new clients* Hello! I provide support to those of us who don't always fit in and have experienced some rough times. Being human is not always easy and it can generate “stuff”. Maybe the “stuff” you're experiencing right now is feeling overwhelmed from anxiety, addiction or life transitions. It may feel like nothing seems to be helping and you're alone… like your miles away from the “you” that you want to be. Let’s get you some tools to break this pattern because you're looking here and you're ready for a change.

I love working with kids and their parents! Loud kids, active kids, mad kids, disruptive kids, depressed or anxious kids, unhappy teenagers with failing grades, school discipline issues or drug/alcohol problems. Whatever the problem, there is usually a fair amount of pain associated with it for everyone in the family. My practice is a safe, nurturing environment for kids and their parents to get help.

Entering therapy can be both daunting and exciting. It usually means something in your life isn’t working quite right, and it also means you are ready to make a change. My goal is to help you discover your own strengths and resources in order to live a life of greater purpose, connection, and joy. We all have a natural tendency to move toward healing and growth, but sometimes painful emotions, negative thoughts, or stressful life events interfere with this natural process. Working together, we can process and release painful emotions and experiences that have kept you stuck.

Sometimes there are moments in life when we feel stuck. Regardless of how hard we try, we feel hopeless and lonely. We might be stuck in a negative cycle in a relationship, feeling hurt and alone where communication has become impossible. Together we will figure out what is at the root of this painful situation. We will detect and process painful past experiences as you build your inner resources, feel better, stronger, and in control of your life and emotions. Relational dynamics change as we explore , heal, and reconnect creating a foundation based on trust and deep emotional connection.

As athletes, it's easy to forget that if we don't mind our mental health, we can feel detached from ourselves, team, and loved ones. In the world of athletics, this happens all too often. Sometimes, we can turn to friends, family, mentors to help us turn it around. Other times, we need additional help. As a former Division 1 & professional athlete, as well as a coach at the club and collegiate levels, I provide a safe and empathetic space for athletes, coaches, and their families to work through challenges. After beginning this work at Baylor Athletics, I strive to continue investing in wellness for the athletic community.

Hello, my name is Susanne Maynard. I work well with those experiencing anxiety, depression and grief. My biggest strengths are personal experience, a love of learning, and a willingness to try something new. I am always learning and growing. I believe my best work is done with those who have been wounded in the past, and are now ready to take charge of their personal healing journey. My approach is eclectic and tailored to each client, although the primary method I utilize is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). We will explore together what you believe is keeping you 'stuck' and what you would like to change.

I have over a decade of experience in the mental health field in Austin, working with an immensely diverse range of clients in an equally diverse range of environments—from public elementary schools to trails and pastures. I began my career as a campus-based therapist and case manager working in schools providing trauma therapy to children deemed at-risk. From there, I switched from the school setting to working on a horse ranch providing trauma-focused equine therapy to children and families. Prior to opening my own private practice, I was the clinical director of a group practice in Austin focused on inclusive mental healthcare.

"Why is this so hard? We love each other, but we can't stop fighting." I understand the hopelessness of living in a cycle of conflict. I became a couples therapist because I believe deeply in the importance of having a supportive and loving relationship--with yourself and with your partner. I will help you learn how to stop when anger, fear and hurt cause you to react in defensive and aggressive ways toward your partner. By slowing down and taking care of yourself first, you will gradually learn how to connect from a more vulnerable and honest place, creating a more satisfying and peaceful relationship together.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Austin?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
