I am committed to working hard alongside my clients to provide professional, insightful counsel that is rooted in a biblical worldview. Many of the people I work with struggle against persistent anxiety, regularly fight off dark thoughts, or suffer as a result of trauma. Often, those individual experiences are even deeply interwoven with one another. Amidst our suffering and pain, I believe the Lord is faithful to bring freedom and healing.

Some of these problems might include overcoming a chronic mental illness such as bi-polar disorder, anxiety or depression; childhood sexual, physical abuse and/or neglect, addictions and compulsive behaviors.
"I believe that everyone needs at least one person in their life that "breathes life" into that person. Just as we need air to breathe, we need affirmation, understanding and connection--especially when dealing with our most intimate issues. Before we can bare our soul, we must be able to trust someone. I would like to be that someone for you. I work with individuals and families that struggle with many different issues such as school, work, relationships or crisis's of faith. I have a special interest in working with those who have endured traumatic experiences - adults or children.

In addition to 13 years of specializing in trauma, PTSD, depression and anxiety, I have a passion for women who are going through difficult life transitions or are in crisis.
I help women build resilience to weather the storms of life with grace and strength. I know the importance of being able to bounce back from loss, disappointment, or crisis. As a therapist who works with women stung and damaged by all sorts of life events, I believe that resilience is one of the single most important qualities that enables us to bounce back from the edge. Resilience allows us to find our strength in adverse circumstances. It requires a willingness to fall apart for a time and get in touch with our pain. There is much healing that can be accomplished by getting to know yourself at your rawest and darkest times.

I have a passion for helping adult individuals and couples (married or divorced) in the areas of marriage, parenting, separating, divorce, co-parenting, blended families, trauma, anxiety and life transition.
Relationships are what humans were created for and can be extremely life-giving. However, sometimes we go through hardships that may create distance or unhealthy behavior patterns in these relationships. As a counselor and former educator using a holistic approach, I take into consideration the unique needs and strengths of each individual I work with. I strive to create a non-judgemental space where clients feel heard and understood. By utilizing evidence-based techniques, I assist clients in identifying patterns, gaining self-awareness and developing practical tools to overcome obstacles.

I work with people who are ready to make a change, however aren't sure where to start. My clients often find themselves overwhelmed with their daily responsibilities. Most people who start therapy feel like they are going round in circles, repeating negative emotions. They feel they do not always have enough time for self-care. People may describe them as the "strong" or "nice" friend. They find it hard to say no to others. They do not want to be seen as mean or judgement, so they hold back certain parts of their authentic self. They would like to be who they truly are, and not who everyone wants them to be.

You've tried to stop using substances, engaging in problematic sexual behavior or viewing pornography on your own, but can’t. Your spouse, partner or other loved ones are hurting. They say they can't trust you anymore. Even worse, you feel you can't trust yourself. Your reality now consists of escalating feelings of failure, guilt, inadequacy and shame. And again, you turn to medicate and escape your reality. The vicious cycle continues. All you want is relief. Please know, hope and healing is possible.

There is always hope; in every situation, in every relationship, through every hardship. Each one of us is a lot more equipped to face, overcome and thrive through adversity than we realize. A great place to start on this journey of self-discovery is in therapy; a space that's safe emotionally, mentally and physically.

Hello! Ruth Roddy, here! I've spent the past 9 years devoted to the stabilization and treatment of eating disorders. I have been a therapist and in leadership at all levels of care in multiple treatment settings. I work with adolescents (all genders) and adults who experience body image distress and minor to extreme eating disorder behaviors. I am passionate about women's issues (identity, motherhood, gender roles, expectations). My experience is that the more you lean into establishing your values and building your relationships the less focused on your body you will become.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
