The decision to begin therapy is rarely easy, but once you begin you may be surprised by the changes that unfold. Finding a therapist who helps you feel safe, supported, and challenged is central to this process. I've been fortunate to work with a wide range of people, including those dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, self-esteem issues, sexual issues, sexual and gender identity exploration, health concerns, artistic blockages, addiction, parenting, and fertility issues.

As a cognitive-behavioral practitioner, I utilize a goal oriented, symptom-focused approach while understanding the importance of a warm, trusting relationship with one's therapist. I specialize in the treatment of adults with various anxiety, depressive, and personality disorders including OCD, social anxiety, panic, generalized anxiety disorder, perfectionism, phobias, depression, and interpersonal difficulties. My patients often tell me that I have allowed them to feel comfortable due to my warm and compassionate demeanor while still challenging and motivating them therapeutically. I believe that developing this trust with a therapist is imperative for successful treatment.

I have experience working with adults, adolescents, children and families who have experienced a variety of mental health issues including anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, and trauma.
It's normal to feel overwhelmed when trying to manage the expectations we set for ourselves and that others set for us. Given the busy nature of our lives, there is little time to process what these expectations mean to us and why they can cause us distress. Therapy can give space for life to slow down, to limit distractions, and to keep the judgments of others out. By engaging in the therapeutic process, we gain an understanding of our values and how they inform our behavior and emotional well-being.

My expertise is in anxiety, trauma, and people from families with mental health issues.
When excessive worries and stress arise, we often overthink each and every decision. It can begin to feel as if we are stuck in our lives. Relationships, work, sleep, and enjoyment are all negatively affected. With warmth and openness, I'll guide you as you gain insight into your interpersonal relationships, behaviors, and choices. I'll help you learn to trust your instincts and reduce self doubt so that decision making becomes easier. I encourage you to bring whatever struggles you may encounter, both big and small, past and present, to our sessions.

In a society that values toxic positivity, rugged individualism, internal solutions to external problems, and work ethic over work/life balance - it can be really hard to not feel ashamed, guilty, or even dismissed for not being a “productive member of society” or for not feeling heard or validated in your pain that maybe doesn’t have a solution or an outlet to plug into. This often leads to feeling a sense of emptiness, meaninglessness in life, unsatisfying personal relationships, anxious avoidance, and a lost sense of self.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
