Upon establishing that connection and promoting it's growth, I find Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy works wonders for regulating the nervous system; therefore, allowing that higher level thinking needed to explore a fuller range of emotion to "come back online".
I often encourage use of creative Narrative Therapy techniques for clients to give sculptures, drawings, etc. to words and emotions that are difficult to express and help them track their progress. A little Play-doh or clay and some supportive questioning can create waves of movement in session :)
