I offer in person & virtual talk therapy, specializing in attachment work, life transitions, anxiety, depression, grief, parenting stress, & perinatal mental health. I aim to create a space of nonjudgement and compassion, focusing on your strengths. Together, we will explore what I call the "crunchy stuff"- that is, the interplay of your past and present. My pluralistic, psychodynamic approach allows you to delve deeper but also maintain a focus on the here and now, working towards realistic goals that will help you build the life you deserve. I also believe in the power of laughter and light- let's explore how we can infuse that!

I believe life is all about balance. In therapy, that often means balancing change with acceptance. I try to create a safe place that empowers all clients to make needed changes, and do the brave work of accepting themselves and their lives, just as they are. I feel most effective when working with clients working through anxiety, depression, adjustments, relationships, trauma and working to break the cycles of intergenerational trauma. I hope to make ALL clients feel accepted and validated. I am committed to building my cultural awareness and sensitivity to be able to serve people from diverse walks of life.

Hi, I’m Abby. I help people find ways of moving through pain more effectively and wholeheartedly. Experience working with psychiatric crises and severe & persistent mental illness taught me that presence and connection are possible amid deep emotional pain and the human capacity for meaningful change is remarkable. “You know that the antidote to exhaustion is not necessarily rest? … The antidote to exhaustion is wholeheartedness.” - David Whyte

What is your story? The question seems simple, but it isn’t. Your story is comprised of your life’s experiences from your perspective. Our stories contain themes of joy, excitement love, life and heartbreak, fear, anger and loss. With the demands of daily life such as career or relationships, it can be difficult to engage in being the author of your story. Who is narrating your story? Are negative thoughts dictating your self-image? Is your anxiety controlling your narrative? Or is your sadness causing you to stare at a blank page? Ultimately, everyone deserves a better story.

A trauma therapist, certified in EMDR and EAGALA equine therapy. Horses are metaphors for the human experience and how each individual interprets the herd explains how they see themselves in the human constellation Approaching horses helps us reflect how we approach our relationships and how we can face other big or overwhelming things in our lives. Since the solutions are personally experienced in conjunction with intellectual understanding, they tend to be deeper, more profound, and longer lasting. I walk with my clients through the trauma and to the other side of healing.

Have you done all the things you were supposed to and still find yourself feeling disconnected, anxious, and filled with self-doubt? Despite your accomplishments you don’t feel the sense of fulfillment you expected. A big life change—maybe a breakup, new job, new marriage, or move—has highlighted the fact that you’re still not as happy or content as you want to be. Something is telling you that you need to make a shift (even if you’re not quite sure what it is). You’re ready to enjoy relationships that give you a sense of belonging and understanding and to feel confident in the direction your life is headed.

There are moments in life when we can hit an emotional road block. New challenges may present themselves that are difficult to overcome alone. Life can become either overwhelming or we can learn new coping strategies and overcome old wounds. These difficulties do not have to derail us. This is why I strive to help people return to a place where they can grow and flourish to their fullest potential. I believe in an integrated vision of the human person. As a psychologist, I seek healing that acknowledges the interdependent psychological, biological and spiritual aspects of my clients.

We all have an innate capacity to create a sense of well-being. Yet, the demands of our lives---difficult relationships, losses, disappointments, transitions---can cause feelings of helplessness or even despair. Vitality falls way to depression or anxiety or addictive behaviors. Therapy can be useful to better understand and manage the complexities of your life; to reclaim some vitality; to love, work, and play in ways that are more congruent with who you strive to be. With twenty five years of experience, I offer seasoned and compasssionate guidance as you define your specific goals and work toward inhabiting a truer version of yourself.

Meeting with a therapist is an important part of overall health, not to mention, the best way to sort out difficult life circumstances. The work I do with my clients is focused on bringing them to a place of "something better" in their lives. I don't have any magical answers, but I can provide validation, fresh perspectives, a touch of guidance and a completely safe and non-judgmental environment for you to resolve the issues that have you on this site looking for a therapist.

As a therapist, I strive to create an environment for my clients that fosters acceptance and connection in a way that best supports their healing and their journey. It is one of the greatest honors of my life to walk beside my clients through sorrow, anxiety, joy – all the experiences inherent in being human. I seek to aid clients in recognizing their own strengths as well as assist them in developing new coping skills to meet life’s challenges. As a therapist, I aim to greet every client, every session with non-judgment, radical acceptance, and a genuine interest in their wellbeing.

Having been in the field for a decade, I enjoy working with a wide variety of clients and have a passion for people in the midst of life transitions such as shifting relationships, career change, and health issues. Most importantly, I desire to walk with my clients into the depths of their hearts and to help awaken them to their inherent worth. I believe the counseling process is an art and I consider it a privilege to walk with my clients toward healing.

My philosophy about therapy is that when you meet a client where they are, that they can achieve every and any goal that they could possibly think of. My experience across various levels of care allows me to help you navigate through unchartered waters and to be with you throughout the journey. In fact, it'll be my honor to do so.

I believe that we all deserve support and at the core of personal transformation is a duality of self-compassion and desire for change. As humans we are intrinsically wired for connection, resiliency and healing. However, sometimes there are things from the past or other life stressors that cause us to feel stuck and that healing is out of our reach. I am deeply interested in the mind-body connection and believe reconnecting to our bodies can be incredibly transformational. I work with folks in adolescence and adulthood who are desiring to address trauma, optimal performance, depression, anxiety and life transitions.

Growth requires a willingness to be vulnerable and honest, both with ourselves and others. True healing can only occur when we are brave enough to shine a light on the darkest corners of our souls. My professional experience includes working with previously incarcerated individuals, those facing addiction, and clients dealing with trauma and relational issues. Therapy works when clients bring their courage, openness, and honesty into session. The work is not always a pleasant stroll in the park; rather, it's a challenging trek that requires resilience and determination.

I believe healing and freedom are possible and am honored to walk with people to find their way to relief. We know trauma can rob us of safety and trust. Together, we will work to rebuild a sense of trust and create a safe place for you to unpack hard things. I practice from an eclectic approach which allows me to pull from different therapeutic theories and modalities to best serve clients. My work centers around creating a non-judgemental place to heal and empower you to implement skills and tools in your own story.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Nashville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
