Are you someone who is conscientious, careful, sensitive and want to succeed, but sometimes feel like getting through the day is too hard? Do fear, worry or sadness hold you back from the life you could live? We all encounter rough patches in life when we find ourselves stuck or feeling held back by an obstacle placed in our path. Therapy can empower us with the tools to overcome those obstacles so that we can move forward strengthened and better prepared for the future.

My work is grounded in compassion, curiosity, and connection. I come to clinical social work with a deeply held belief that all people are deserving of care and I have seen how a safe and collaborative therapeutic relationship can offer support when that care has been challenged. I know that part of healing means acknowledging and working beyond the systems that have caused harm and that this involves actively employing an anti-oppressive lens that refuses to pathologize trauma survival. I understand my clients are the experts on their experiences and I am committed to creating a practice that affirms people of all backgrounds.

No matter what challenge you are facing, making the decision to enter therapy is one of the most important steps we can take on the path to healing. I do not believe any of us were born to suffer. I seek to help my clients find the opportunities for growth that our challenges present us with. While I support my clients to learn to sit with and accept that difficult emotions are a part of living, I also help clients to identify where unnecessary suffering is created by limited beliefs and self concepts. By resolving unhealed traumas and the burdens of the past, we can experience a more wholehearted, joyful life.

Covid-19: Meet by Zoom or in person. For over 30 years, I have offered attentive and thoughtful psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in a comfortable home office with a private waiting area. My style has been described as welcoming, engaging, flexible and "serious yet playful". I work with a wide range of problems: work and relationships struggles, depression, anxiety, insomnia, alcohol abuse, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, personality disorders and many other matters people bring up. I am slow to recommend medication, but work in concert with a number of psychiatrists should either of us believe medication might be beneficial.

I am a psychotherapist and music therapist. I enjoy working with kids, teens, and adults of all ages. I approach therapy from an anti-oppressive and systems perspective, meaning that my primary lens seeks to understand systemic barriers and discriminatory cultural contexts that impact the well-being of those I work with. I am well positioned to work with folks who are LGBTQIA+ and/or inhabit non-traditional family/relationship structures. I have many years of experience working with folks who are grieving, chronically/terminally ill, autistic, depressed, anxious, and folks who have experienced trauma.

I am a licensed clinical social with over thirty years of experience. I view the relationship between myself and the client as central to the healing process of therapy. People often initiate therapy because they are experiencing emotional pain that is hard to understand, to change, and that creates a feeling of helplessness. My objective is to offer a safe and supportive environment in which together we can explore internal conflicts, behavioral patterns, and negative thinking patterns, that have prevented achieving a more satisfying life. I work with a range of issues : anxiety, depression, sexual abuse, relationship problems.

Navigating relationships can be hard can't they? Making the decision to separate from your family can be stressful. Feeling satisfied and fulfilled in your season of singleness comes with its challenges. Single parenting and life after separation or divorce can be overwhelming. You don't have to do it alone.

THE ONLY WAY OUT IS THROUGH (Robert Frost)... It is human to suffer and it is human to face challenges. When the suffering becomes too great, and the challenges too large, good therapy can play a key role in bringing about change. If you decide to work with me, I would consider it an honor to become part of your journey towards increased health and well-being. When you come to therapy, you will be treated with respect. I bring many years of experience as a therapist, providing both brief evidence-based interventions and long term psychodynamic approach. I will work carefully with you to define and achieve your personal goals.

Waitlist for new clients
I am currently maintaining a waitlist and do not offer nighttime weekend availability. I enjoy working with adults, women, the LGBTQIA+ community, and people who are pregnant or postpartum. My specialty is in helping people through life transitions, anxiety, stress management, exploration of personal identity, communication, creation of a balanced life and strengthening connection with oneself and others. I enjoy working with people who value the connection to the earth and community around them, in addition to people who have what other's may deem "alternative lifestyles" or beliefs.

My approach to therapy is client-centered, humanistic, integrative, narrative, and trauma-informed. Together, we can work to uncover and retell the narratives of your life. We will in no way dismiss the hardships you have faced, rather, we can honor these experiences through thoughtful reflection. Through this process, we can also collaborate to cultivate more balance, purpose, passion, and growth in your life. I also strive to always acknowledge how systemic oppression can affect my clients lives. Therapy is absolutely a space where one should feel comfortable processing the impact of oppression.

The decision to seek treatment and find the right therapist can be anxiety inducing. In fact, many times the journey stops here for those who might not be ready to take the next step. I know that being vulnerable with a stranger is uncomfortable and may be difficult when first beginning your therapeutic journey. However, my hope is that I can assist you in taking small steps towards building a trusting relationship together and reaching your therapeutic goals. Together, we can reflect upon what you’re needing from yourself, your relationships, and your environment and what changes can be made to enhance your overall quality of life.

Welcome! In my view, therapy is like a journey, and whether you begin that journey with a specific destination in mind or are just trying to get a move on, I can help shed new light and give you tools to navigate old territory and new horizons. My approach is pragmatic - unassuming but not naive, and compassionate but also candid.

I believe that we all struggle with trauma, and most mental health challenges stem from how one adapts to these experiences. I specialize in working with trauma, identifying how it is held in the body, the strategies we uphold as defense mechanisms, and how to negotiate with our inner self to move toward a healthy healing of mind and body. Coming from either a top down approach for those thinker types, or a bottom up approach for those feeler types, we will compassionately reconnect the mind and body, in order to achieve relief and greater connectivity to self and others.

Are you feeling stuck? Do you need to drop into greater ease or “grounding”, but you keep getting “triggered” and respond in your old ways? Have you tried meditation or yoga, yet feel something is missing? Have you sensed true “flow” and playfulness in your interactions with others or within yourself, but, sadly, it is just not consistent? Educators, do seek being that teacher who moved you into this profession? Have you spent time learning how to develop your parenting and general relationship skills, but you keep reverting to prior patterns of reactivity? If so, try something new with me.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Philadelphia?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
