Adults with anxiety &/or anger.
With over 25 years of experience in this field, I am unique and eclectic in my approach. I particularly enjoy working with clients who have been seen as "difficult" by others or who have been dissatisfied with counseling in the past. I recognize the hard work that goes into bringing about change, but still feel the overall experience in counseling should be enjoyable. I am passionate about my work and try to make myself as accessible as possible. I welcome the opportunity to discuss your issues with you in a totally free/phone consultation.

I have experience working with a variety of therapeutic concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, anger, impulsivity, and life transitions.
Anxious? Depressed? Lacking motivation or direction? You're not alone. I believe that each of us possesses the ability to change, grow and live happier, healthier, more fulfilling lives. Sometimes we just need a little help along the way. I work with persons of all ages and incorporate a variety of evidence-based treatment modalities into my practice, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all model for counseling and take special care to honor the unique lived experiences of those I work with.

My approach is based upon finding a mutual language that we both understand & incorporating therapeutic interventions into terms you already know. I believe that those who are this far in seeking out support (you are reading an “about me” from a therapist), already have an idea of what they want to improve, be better at, &/or overcome, but might not fully know where to start or how to reach the end goal. I work collaboratively with my clients, to encourage & empower them to manage their own lives.

It takes a great deal of courage to seek out psychological services. I admire anyone who seeks out services with me. I wholeheartedly believe that if I had the same biology and the same life experiences, I would be in the exact same position. While I offer general psychotherapy in my office on the grounds of Marywood University where I am an Assistant Professor, I specialize in treatment of intimate partner violence; a pervasive and destructive force in our culture. It is my passion to treat both offenders and those who have been impacted by violence.

I like to take an individualistic approach to therapy. I do my best to tailor sessions to meet everyone's unique personalities and needs as well as provide an enviroment conducive to achieving your personal goals. If you are interested in supervision hours, I provide individual rates, discounted group rates as well as flexibility in schedule. Acquiring hours is strenuous enough but I believe the process itself can be fun. I like to take a relaxed approach while still mantaining a beneficial learning enviroment.

My orientation is to help a person grow beyond his or her legacy and to resolve underlying issues and conflicts, in order to assist one in becoming a healthier human being. Successful treatment helps someone work through particular difficulties to a [significant] enough degree so that he or she is not doomed to repeat mistakes, symptoms, and less healthy ways of engaging with the world. The potential personal growth can lead to [meaningfully] improved interpersonal relationships, overall adaptation, and contributions to and enjoyment of life. This psychotherapy takes place in a concerned, supportive, nonjudgmental, safe environment with the utmost confidentiality.

Anger Management Therapists

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
