I'm interested in helping you grow toward a life that feels rich, satisfying, and fully your own. I believe that we become ourselves through our relationships with others, and that my job as a psychotherapist is to offer you non-judgmental, honest interactions in which you can learn about yourself with acceptance and compassion. We need as much of ourselves and our feelings as possible to enjoy our lives, engage in our relationships, and make changes when necessary. I look forward to being with you as you grow to know more about yourself and your impact on the world around you.

I have been a practicing psychotherapist for the past twenty-five years. I believe we have all experienced challenging events in our lives that have never been adequately resolved, especially difficult childhoods and family disfunction. My unique specialty is to assist in discovering and moving beyond old patterns and belief systems in order to allow more self-understanding, authenticity, and sense of self-worth. I do this through my training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and a gentle form of bi-lateral therapy called EMDR.

Are you a strong, successful woman who’s struggling on the inside, no matter how together you look on the outside? Life feels so hard; it’s all getting to be too much. You hate feeling like you’re not in control, but you also doubt your decisions. You feel worthless, taking the blame when things go wrong. Nothing stops the pain, no matter how busy you stay at work or how much you pretend that living like this is good enough. I’m Melanie. I'll help you overcome fears, frustrations, and loneliness, no matter how accomplished you are. You'll learn how to trust yourself again, to feel more alive, and fall in love with your future.

We have a lot in common. As human beings, our nature is to be resilient and wholehearted. Presence is fundamental to our wellbeing. We want the freedom to define ourselves on our terms and also to sense our belonging to the world around us. We live in an era when antiquated paradigms are giving way to new possibilities and, as humanity grapples with its place among the family of things, more equitable, sustainable, and intra-connected models for healing are emerging.

Seeking therapy is often prompted by sudden crisis or by having reached the limit of endurance over an issue or situation. I work to help re-establish a greater sense of inner wellbeing and a deeper sense of one's self, from which clients are able to more successfully address depression, anxiety, life transitions and difficult relationships.

Sometimes we find ourselves closed off, disconnected, in a state of hurt and protection, confused or being overly critical of ourselves. This can affect our lives in many ways; as lack of self-confidence, blame, isolation, unhealthy relationships, anger, resignation or addictions. I want to help you develop the tools and find your inner resources to have peace in your life and heal past hurt. Healing can happen when we find safety within ourselves and with another person. This is what counseling provides and what I offer you: a safe non judgmental space to be yourself freely.

I provide individual psychotherapy, couples counseling, and career guidance. Individual psychotherapy offers the chance to solve problems and chart new directions in life. You can free yourself from restrictive patterns of the past, develop emotional balance in the present, and enjoy new growth possibilities for the future. In psychotherapy, these goals come within reach through the conscious examination of life patterns. They come to realization through the careful encouragement of human potential. As you develop a subtler awareness of your own thoughts, emotions, and communication patterns, you can learn to change your life.

Healing begins through relationship. Our work together will first be to build a safe and trusting relationship to engage in a deeper process of transformation. All of our experiences, prenatally to the present, have led us to who we are today. Sometimes, we need help figuring out where we’re stuck, what’s getting in the way and how to find our way forward. This can be tricky to navigate by ourselves. Through open and honest exploration of your unique experiences, I will guide you in slowing down while finding a deeper sense of self-awareness and healthier ways to move forward.

By dictionary definition, any event that has had a lasting negative effect on the self or psyche is by its very nature "traumatic." These events create extreme stress in the body and mind and memories of the event can trigger reactions, emotions, beliefs and physical sensations that existed on the day the memory was originally created. An estimated 70 percent of adults in the United States have experienced a traumatic event at least once in their lives.

I help clients look at their lives through the perspective of their soul in order to move out of suffering and into more empowered ways of being. Using several therapeutic approaches and practices, we identify ancestral patterns, release fear, limiting beliefs, and traumas stored in the body that cause imbalance and pain. I work with those who resonate with a spiritual, earth based, somatic, and creative approach to their healing journey, and those looking to integrate psychedelic experiences. I believe in the power of art therapy and its ability to surface what’s been stuck inside in order to identify, examine, and release it.

Life is incredible and beautiful. Everyone experiences challenges and disappointments along the way. In response, anxiety, depression, and stress can sometimes become struggles that feel insurmountable. Maybe as a result of the loss of a job, having a tough time in a relationship, coping with online schooling and having to work full time. The grief we experience having lost a loved one. Therapy can offer a key to a different perspective and a new beginning. Together we can work to unravel the disturbing issues present in your life and discover a more joyful journey.

I have been in practice in New Mexico for 23 years, treating depression, anxiety, relationships, and life changes. I am continuing to do video and telephonic sessions for individuals. I like to use a listening, supportive stance with clients to help them feel comfortable in talking about their problems. Some of the techniques I use are mindfulness, regulating emotions, relationship skills, tolerating distress, and mind/body techniques. I believe that therapy works, and is worth the time, effort, and money you put into it.

How can I find a therapist in Santa Fe?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
