I am trained in the following evidence-based practices: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; Dialectical Behavioral Therapy; Seeking Safety; Anger Management.
The work to change and grow can be hard, but it is well worth it. I believe that the fruits of wellness and recovery done earnestly are plentiful: love, joy, peace, self-determination, self-empowerment, growth, change, to name a few. In my work, I view the whole person - mind, body, and spirit - and tailor my interventions that draw on strengths to meet the unique needs of each person. I provide a safe space free of judgment to work through issues together, a space where you feel understood and know that you are heard.

It's a challenge to be in this world. You want to be considerate and kind; you also want to fulfill your potential. Were you were raised with a lot of "shoulds"? Were you told to control or ignore your feelings? Are there issues with anger- yours or anger from loved ones? Anger can lead to feelings of shame. But finding the feelings beneath the anger, you can accept and love yourself. And that can change your life. Here's an old, fun riddle about therapy: "How many therapists does it take to change a light bulb?" "One- but the lightbulb has to want to change." My ideal client may not know how to, but they want to change.

Throughout our lives, we all have experienced feelings of depression, anxiety, and anger. These emotions leave you feeling insecure, shameful, lonely, unworthy and stuck in unhealthy patterns of behavior. Trauma can have negative emotional and physical effects and can lead to family/relationship issues. I specialize in solution-focused brief therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness and CBT. These approaches allow me to work with the client to decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression and other health/behavioral issues.

Nonviolent Communication™ and self compassion are core to my practice which are helpful for anger management as well as communication across settings and relationships.
Starting therapy and finding the right fit can be a daunting task. I view the therapeutic relationship as something that is co-created over time and as the primary tool for healing. I have experience working with ages 3-50+ providing specific insights and tools relevant for the progressive stages of life and the many difficulties that can come up along the way. Focusing on the here and now, we work to increase self awareness, compassion, insight and care while simultaneously holding the larger context within which we meet, including ways that race, gender, class and culture impact our experiences and identities.

Anger Management Therapists

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
