Therapy can be such an overwhelming process to get started with, especially when you may also be struggling with ADHD, trauma symptoms, or anxiety that make everyday tasks feel monumental. For marginalized people in particular, feeling safe and truly seen by their therapist may be particularly challenging. As a Black, queer, neurodivergent therapist with 10 years experience, my approach is relational, strengths-based, person-centered, affirming, and anti-oppressive. Together we'll implement accessible, functional strategies to help you close the gap between the life you're living and the life you envision for yourself.

I aim to provide a warm, nonjudgmental, safe environment that will support your innate ability to heal and grow. I view therapy as a collaborative partnership between you and I, and I highly value building deep, genuine connections with the people with whom I work. Through connection, and a gentle balance of nurture and challenge, lasting change can occur. Many of my patients begin therapy feeling stuck, anxious, unhappy, struggling with effects of trauma or loss, or desiring deeper connections in their relationships. Therapy can help you understand more about yourself and what you can do to feel better.

We all experience challenges in our lives. Our primary relationships or lack thereof, shape the way in which we understand the world and our problems. I work with people in a way that examines relationships, relational narratives and that validates & identifies the emotions one may experience. As we experience relational problems and question traditional narratives, these ruptures may be the start of a problem, but being unable to truly identify what these problems make us feel causes a problem to linger. With this in mind, I specialize in working with anxiety, identity concerns, life transitions, interpersonal struggles and trauma.

I view therapy as a collaborative process and will work with you to identify appropriate goals, customize the treatment plan to fit your needs, and meet you where you are. I can flexibly implement evidence-based treatments to effect real, measurable change in your life based on therapeutic approaches that have known efficacy in the community. One of the most critical pieces of therapy is a strong therapeutic alliance so it is important to me to hear from you about your experience in therapy, what your strengths are and what makes your life worth living.

Every story is unique. My job in session is to listen well and frame a space that invites you to speak freely. I work exclusively through telehealth, and my areas of expertise are in helping people who are grappling with overwhelming emotions, dissociative defenses, or the aftermath of painful experiences to get to a place that's more livable. Integrating the tools of old school psychotherapy with affective neurobiology, relational theories of change, and a horizontal treatment approach, I help you get to the root of the problem as we work in the moment towards equilibrium and a sense of connectedness to yourself and others.

Three beliefs I hold that influence how I practice are 1) human beings are not problems to be solved 2) therapy is ultimately about relationship 3) the process itself is the solution. We humans are infinitely complex; we're full of opposition and paradox. Our culture pushes quick fixes and immediate answers, but lasting change rarely comes about when we work in this way. I'm interested in helping you come into fuller, richer, more conscious relationship with all of your moving and sometimes disparate parts. Together we will work from the inside out through a deep, relational process.

I have worked helping others through most of life's mess. I have helped couples overcome relationship issues such as poor trust, infidelity and co-parenting. For years I have assisted active duty service members and veterans with the challenges and decisions they face. I have provided bereavement support for groups and individuals dealing with the significant grief and loss. Every person has unique challenges and sometimes we deal with layers of life difficulties. I am no stranger to helping clients cope. I would be honored to assist you in working through your challenges and helping you reach your goal.

Black Align Self-discovery & Wellness fosters a culturally sacred and emotionally safe space where individuals of divergent backgrounds are encouraged to freely and candidly discuss their past traumas and current stressors. Far too often in the therapeutic space, people of color have been stigmatized, misdiagnosed, misunderstood and have had their lived individual experiences minimized. Black Align was created with these truths in mind. Through our work we aim to heal the whole person without fear of judgment, lack of understanding or accountability.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Philadelphia?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
