Attachment difficulties can leave people feeling empty, fearful, avoidant and confused. Some patients come in feeling overwhelmed by their emotions and may have intense and difficult relationships at home, school, or work. Others may have a harder time identifying emotions and may avoid conflict and feel unknown, unseen, or like a chameleon in their relationships. Some struggle with shame and/or painful memories and childhood trauma. I work best with individuals who may have had exposure to skill-based therapies like DBT and CBT, and are now looking beyond symptom management toward deep psychological understanding and change.
Transference and psychodynamic approaches to treatment start with an assumption that a patient's symptoms are not just problems to be gotten rid of, but are valuable communications. Psychodynamic therapy encourages attention and elaboration of any and all thoughts, feelings, or images in order to begin to understand parts of the self previously unknown.
Affectively experiencing previously intolerable feelings and thoughts within the context of a safe therapeutic relationship open new pathways where novel ways of being can be lived/tried out. I believe these experiences within the therapeutic relationship lead to deep and longstanding change. Please visit my website for more information on my approaches.
