I believe the most fundamental aspect of therapy is the relationship between the client and counselor. Growth and change can't take place without an empathetic and trusting relationship. I work with my clients to develop a safe, non-judgmental space to explore and work through negative thought patterns, emotions and behaviors that can prevent the happiness and satisfaction with life that we all deserve. Together we will examine and foster your strengths, uncover ways to move past prior painful or traumatic experiences and problem-solve current life stressors to allow you to fully live the life you want.

You’re exhausted. You are a sensitive, unique soul, and you’re tired of spinning your wheels. You put a lot of pressure on yourself. You know you can do better in several areas, but you’re not sure where to start. Thinking about it, alone, makes you feel overwhelmed. You’re scared that when you finally take the leap and reach out to someone for help, nothing will change. They won’t get you, won’t see the real you. You’re not even sure you can open up enough for real change, but you know you want to try, with someone smart and sincere to help you make sense of things, no bullshit.

Sometimes it's difficult to know the full extent of the way our trauma and life experiences have impacted us. We find ourselves repeating certain patterns that we know are not good for us and can't seem to break the chain, we constantly fall into moods and feelings that it's difficult to pull ourselves out of. In deciding to do therapy with me, together we learn how to identify the ways in which your past trauma and life experiences show up in your adult life and begin rewriting your narrative for your future.

The need to feel heard and understood exists within all of us and is vital to thrive in life.  Without this need being met, you can find yourself struggling with feeling disconnected from others, weighed down by depression, held back by traumatic memories, overwhelmed by worry and fear, or stuck in your life while it seems as if everyone else is passing you by.  Holding your story with great care, I can offer you a safe haven so that you can reach your own healing and a sense of empowerment in your life.

It is not easy to find someone with whom to share your inner world. As a therapist, I seek to provide a secure holding space that can assist in containing those feelings, because I believe that having a judgement-free space to develop awareness is important to one’s mental health. In this process, I will help you explore all the different parts of yourself, even the ones that feel the most shameful or unwanted. This process allows you to gain a more dynamic sense of yourself by getting to know the parts that have been kept at a distance. I believe this work can help make the intolerable a bit more tolerable.

I have been practicing for over 28 years as a couples, family and individual therapist, for children, adolescents and adults. My areas of specialty include relationships, how to manage conflicts, parenting teens, how to maintain intimacy and co-parent effectively, including the difficulties of dating, infidelity, divorce, sex and finances. Individual problems include depression, anxiety, panic attacks, history of trauma, infertility, and other personal issues. Early career work supervising therapists in a court based crisis unit led me to many decades of work with NYC teens and their families.

Many of my clients are adults asking the "who am I" questions. They come to me to explore, express & discover themselves, perhaps for the first time or perhaps as part of a lifelong process. Whether anxiety or depression, a crisis, loss or trauma, feeling stuck or in transition, relationship issues, or being new to New York first sent them to me, what they all have in common is a desire to feel more authentic, more connected & at ease, and to live life with more joy, passion & purpose. I combine talk therapy with somatic therapies to help you reach your goals, embody your true self, and live the life you were meant to live.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
