No one wants to live in a stressful, unhappy home. But this is the result when adults and children don't know how to communicate with each other in a safe, non-combative way. Parents whose children have ADHD, ADD or suffer from anxiety, depression, attachment and separation issues, cutting or obsessive-compulsive disorders say the coping and change strategies they develop through my counseling sessions are enabling them to become, in one mom's words, "more normal" families.

As an experienced, licensed counselor, I understand what steps are needed to make real healing possible. Just like the physical body, healing for the mind and spirit requires time and it is important to know at the onset that the counseling process will be a journey, rather than a sprint. I provide my clients with a safe, non-judgmental space in which to share their story, helping them take their first steps on the path to lasting health. As a trauma-informed, source-focused counselor, I prioritize addressing the root source of a problem rather than its symptoms.

I work with most life issues including, but not limited to, self-growth, depression, anxiety, relationship and family problems, spirituality, cutting, adoption, trauma, loss, ADHD, adolescent and family concerns, eating concerns, college transition, retirement transition, and bipolar disorder.
I view my clients as fellow human beings in search of some type of change. For one reason or another, they feel stuck or unable to get where they want. Together we work towards growth by identifying the issues involved, establishing hopes and goals, and increasing awareness of recurring patterns that maintain dysfunction. I find that often these patterns were somehow adaptive, but are now "outdated" for life's current situation. As awareness of one's desires, perceptions, fears, and strengths increase, doors often begin to open. There are more options and more opportunities for change and connection with others.

My personal and professional experience with mental health began not as a therapist, rather as an advocate for equality in the women’s health community. It is my passion for social justice that has led me to the sacred space in which I can now support others. I trust the power of acceptance and genuineness. I believe that when we are true to self, growth and healing can naturally occur.

As a child and adolescent therapist, I acknowledge the joys and the challenges we as parents often experience. By working with children and their parents as a family system, there is an increase in the overall efficacy of treatment. Often, many of our struggles as a family stem from our ability to fully understand each others' experiences and view points. Learning to communicate more effectively, regulate emotions, and be more mindful in our every day lives can drastically improve our personal and familial experiences.

Hi, I’m Kendra— a quirky, affirming, clinical social worker with over 10 years of experience in the mental health field. I have worked with all ages in my career, but find I highly enjoy working with Gen Z and Millenials in navigating the unique stressors faced by these generations. Specifically I love helping individuals with life transitions, living as their authentic selves, and navigating the effects of trauma. I also specialize in LGBTQ+ related issues, and severe depression that includes symptoms of suicidality and self-harm. I particularly enjoy working with clients that have tried other therapies without success.

I believe that all humans share a basic desire to be well and happy, and to avoid pain and suffering. Sometimes, we just don’t know how to do that. I also believe that connection is key for us as humans. Without it, we struggle to survive much less thrive. Having only one person in our lives we feel connected to and accepted by can open the doorway for healing. Whether you've experienced trauma, loss, or just a general sense of suffering or emptiness, I will use a compassionate, nonjudgmental approach to build that connection and create a space where you can work through the pain and toward a life worth living.

All of us have experiences, feelings, and behaviors we cannot always explain, control, or understand about ourselves. I view therapy as a valuable opportunity to learn about our feelings, thoughts, behaviors, experiences, and develop healthier coping skills so that we can feel better about ourselves and interact more effectively in the world around us. In our work together I will offer you strategies to enhance your life through the use of mindfulness, behavioral, and cognitive techniques. My approach is direct, compassionate, empowering, and non-judgmental.

Talking to a perfect stranger about personal things doesn't exactly make a person feel warm and fuzzy. Realistically though, life is just hard! Sometimes we just need to share our thoughts with someone who can be trusted not to judge how life's toughest blows may have affected us. Sometimes we just need to be able to talk honestly about things we wouldn't share with just anyone. This doesn't make us broken, it makes us 'Human.'

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
