I believe, everyone is uniquely designed and no single approach in therapy can be used exclusively. Over the years of working eclectically with the individuals from all walks of life and being curious about finding ominous approach that could describe it all, I found the following sequence in treatment to be reflective of the needs of many people in therapy.
Phase 1: Psychodynamic - exploring past character formation during the childhood, including the obstacles, traumas from life events or other people. “It’s only when the mind is free from the old that it meets everything anew, and in that there is joy.”
Phase 2: Cognitive behavioral - present learning and practicing ways to stabilize an individual.
Phase 3: Existential - developing and practicing curiosity for the questions on the human nature and existence in the world, for yourself, and for others.
Such a sequence of steps in exploration of an individual, done within one treatment, allows to model life itself together with its developmental phases, and prevent the therapeutic duet from falling into reductionism. Success equally depends on open-mindedness and compatibility of the working duo.
