Unbearable emotional and somatic states, relationship problems, identity crises, difficult life transitions, losses, grief, and trauma are some of the many experiences that plague us and make life hard. While suffering is a natural part of life, it is understandable to want to move away from it. However, it is when we give our suffering a voice that healing can begin.
Though genetics can play a role in the development of psychiatric problems; symptoms and conditions like depression, anxiety, panic attacks, obsessions and compulsions, disordered eating, self-harm, thinking problems, and psychosis are some of the ways our psyche and body deal with pain that has not been understood, contextualized, and articulated.
My goal as a therapist is to help my patients notice how their symptoms are not accidental experiences to dodge, but rather meaningful communications to explore. Only through this inquiry can patients tap into interpersonal/intrapersonal and conscious/unconscious phenomena that have shaped their life and continue to contribute to their suffering.
