I work with kids, but much of my work is actually about changing the way adults see them. Because we’ve become incredibly good at noticing behaviour. The meltdown. The arguing. The anxiety. The perfectionism. The child who “won’t listen.” Behaviour gets our attention. But I think the more important story is often the one we didn’t see. What happened before the meltdown? What has this child been carrying? What are they beginning to believe about themselves? Where are they trying to belong? And what are they communicating? That is where my work begins. It’s also why I love play therapy. Children tell us far more than they can explain
Through play, stories, imagination, relationships, silence, humour, mess, repetition—and sometimes through the very behaviour that concerns us—they show us how they are making sense of their world. My job is to pay attention. And then help you see what I see. I want more from therapy than a child who learns a few more coping skills.
I want parents to understand their child differently. I want children to know that having a hard time doesn’t make them a hard child. And I want families to leave therapy seeing possibilities they couldn’t see before. In 2026, I was honoured to be named Arizona’s Up & Coming Play Therapist—recognition of the work that I’m committed to continuing.
