Accepting clients for Spring 2024. Being human is hard, and we don't get an instruction manual. At times, we get stuck in patterns that prevent us from moving toward our best life. Whether those patterns are thoughts, relationships, past hurts, or habits, therapy provides a safe place to examine those things which are no longer serving us, and the tools to approach these challenges in new ways.

Feel like you're a constantly spinning top, trying desperately not to topple. Honestly, our minds are bombarded by more stimuli in a day than our ancestors faced in a lifetime. It’s overwhelming, Even for people who swear they are not competitive, jealous, or influenced by the current pace of change or amount of choices – it’s exhausting. To students: Navigating what feels like endless academia & adulthood simultaneously? It's hard. Between endless comparisons with your friends who all seem to have the perfect internship to the guilt of spending too much time on Tiktok - you can start to really doubt that you can handle this.

We all hope for what is best for ourselves, but uncontrolled events will happen and when it does it may seem like a setback. Some circumstances can be overcome in solidarity, but others may hinder the way we view ourselves, those around us, and our overall outlook on life. I am optimistic that life’s challenges can be overcome, but an important question to ask oneself, “Can I do it alone?” I strongly believe that therapy can help bring awareness to and help conquer the mental strain such events may bring. With the use of a evidence-based treatment modalities, therapy can assist in unlocking mental clarity to handle what lies ahead.

I believe that the relationships we have form our experiences and beliefs about ourselves and the world. In order to best serve the needs of each client, we need to look at the impact our social supports have had on us and adjust accordingly.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
