When life feels overwhelming, we need to feel seen, heard, and cared for more than ever. If you find that you lack support in your personal life from family, friends, or even work, and you feel like you need more guidance, then I may be a good fit for you. I understand feeling lost and not knowing where to turn. As someone who found resilience in adversity, I know just how difficult it is to navigate these feelings alone. If you are currently in the “counselor hunting” stage, I have been in your shoes and I know it is daunting. It can feel intimidating to try to find the right fit.

A counselor is a client's true ally. Someone who is actively invested in understanding your experiences, emotions, and behaviors can be a powerful tool in helping guide you toward change. The genuine connection between counselor and client can foster a better understanding of self and lead the client to take charge of their own life path. I am honored to be some small part of a client’s journey towards fulfillment. To me, each person's differences make the world a more vibrant place. I hope to celebrate what makes each client unique and also build a connection to what makes us all human.

Working through difficult emotions is a key factor in you living your best life, but sometimes fear and anxiety keeps us from accessing and processing these feelings. I can teach you not only to challenge uncomfortable emotions but to work through those deeper feelings that may get in the way of your success. I have a transtheoretical orientation and have found components of cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and strengths recognition instrumental in treating my clients’ needs.

Therapy goals are a joint process between the client and myself, the therapist. I assist with identifying presenting problems, while we collaborate on identifying goals to address the problems according to the client. Sometimes a client may just need some guidance on life decisions, or support getting through a tough time. Whatever the journey I'm here to help the client navigate through this process. Clients may need to see a new way of doing things in order to get to the next phase of life.

My goal is to help individuals, couples, and families overcome life’s obstacles. I believe individuals possess the resiliency to discover their strengths with guidance in therapy. Through therapy one can elicit strengths to bring about hope, balance, and change in life. I utilize a more collaborative approach to therapy including Collaborative, Narrative, Solution - Focused, and Strategic Family Therapy. However, there is not one theory that fits all challenges. The client is the expert on their life; therefore, as the therapist, collaboration is key to unlocking their potential.

I view counseling as a partnership between the client and myself. I see my role as enabling people to explore ways to heal from emotional hurt, to discover pathways toward more effective and positive ways of thinking, and to adopt helpful patterns of behavior. Through counseling, I help people recognize their strengths; encourage individuals to take responsibility for their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors; and assist people in making and implementing effective decisions. Using an integrative approach to counseling, the techniques I use are cognitive-behavioral, person-centered, solution-focused, and interpersonal. I utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy and family system theories.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
