Reaching out for support can feel overwhelming, but sobriety is worth the effort. Throughout my time working in the behavioral health field, including my role as a clinician at Mountainside treatment center, I have had the pleasure of assisting clients as they embark on their recovery journey. At Mountainside, I use a person-centered approach to form meaningful therapeutic relationships and brainstorm practical solutions to early treatment hurdles. Drawing from evidence-based practices, I have helped people of different ages and socioeconomic backgrounds create treatment plans to ensure a comprehensive and successful recovery.

My approach is positive, practical and proactive. I have been working in the counseling field for over 20 years. While I enjoy working with individuals of all ages, I have a passion for working with women guiding them to regain and increase self-awareness, encourage self-esteem and self-love and ultimately make positive changes to become happier individuals. I specialize in issues including codependency, anxiety, PTSD, as well as developmental disorders and relationship issues. I believe that our behavior is often influenced by our inner experiences, and understanding this connection is crucial in fostering change.

In my 18 years of practice, I've found it most important to maintain fulfilling and satisfying relationships with those around them in order to maintain emotional health. In my experience, relational psychotherapy provides an atmosphere of empathy and attentiveness that elicits full disclosure of the experiences and events affecting the person seeking treatment. I see a therapeutic relationship as two people working together to forge a strong, collaborative, and secure relationship that can serve as a model for future relationships.

At some time in life, everyone feels overwhelmed and looks for a path to a happier, more comfortable day-to-day routine. That is different for everybody, and regardless of your individual needs, I can help you reach your goals. Change is not easy. When change involves mental health including anxiety and depression, substance abuse, or addressing negative behavioral patterns, it is necessary to involve a mental health professional.

“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall” Nelson Mandela. I truly believe that anytime one asks for help, it takes strength and courage. Reality of daily stressors or change can sometimes feel overwhelming, but I believe that we all have the power within ourselves to overcome any obstacle. Reality can break you down, make you feel hopeless, helpless. I am here to show you the self-awareness, strength and confidence that we all need sometimes to conquer our fears and see hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
