You feel hopeless, angst, dread, or freaked out. You feel anxiety and have trouble sleeping, headaches, stress, palpitations, and/or nightmares. You may be struggling in relationship, whether single, and looking for a partner, committed to a partner, or in a recent breakup. You may be stuck at work, not able to get ahead, or unsure if you are in the right profession or company.

NOTE: I now accept insurance through Headway.co for clients in New York State ONLY -- If that changes for clients in other states, I will update here. How we think about our history, experiences, and relationships can center us, or can throw us off-balance and cause us to get stuck. I help clients examine how they are spending their time and energy and help them to make manageable change in line with their values. As we work together, we will uncover what it is you value -- what is important to you. We will work together to make shifts to increase happiness and lead to greater connectedness and clarity.

Lorna Hayim-Baker specializes in marriage/couples counseling. Lorna doesn't feel that weekly one hour sessions work well for couples & that is based on her personal experience and from couples coming to her and calling her their "therapist of last resort." These couples found Ms. Baker by reading reviews written by other satisfied couples who came to Lorna's "My Marriage Marathon" or "My Marathon For Committed Couples Not Yet Bound For Marriage." Call (917) 270-9595 for your free phone consultation. She only accepts people who mesh with her personality. She does not sugar coat the truth. Insurance doesn't cover couple's counseling

Seeking help takes courage. I create a safe, empathic space where, working together, we will uncover and unwind the self-defeating patterns of thought and behavior that are causing you pain. I use a holistic approach, bringing in mindfulness techniques, behavioral interventions, and DBT when needed, to help provide you with insight into unseen obstacles and the practical tools and skills to promote more productive behaviors. I believe good counseling starts with developing an authentic relationship based on trust and genuine caring. I think of our work as sitting side by side at a large table. Whatever problems, memories or feelings you put on the table, it's my job to help you examine them, gain insight, and understand patterns and connections. Together we will help you develop a more integrated story and healthier ways of coping and relating. This kind of collaborative counseling is work I love and I look forward to starting the process with you.

Good therapy can produce long lasting life changes. Although shifts in behavior and emotions can take time, even in the short term there can be immediate relief. I see the relationship between the patient and therapist as central to a positive outcome. Although we are all infinitely diverse and complex, collectively we seek to be understood. I listen with curiosity and empathy to understand each individual's unique experience. In treatment I create an atmosphere of trust where together we can identify your strengths, find practical solutions to problems and unfold underlying vulnerabilities that are obstacles to your experience of a rich and fulfilling life.

Is it time for a change? Do you feel depressed, anxious, stuck, or angry? Do past experiences negatively impact the present? Do you need a safe place to feel listened to and supported? At times, we all find ourselves feeling lost and afraid. Things in our lives may not be going in a desired way or we may find that we come up against the same issues time and again. Life can sometimes be overwhelming and painful. You may feel like things will never get better or that change is out of reach. I believe that the trials of life can be tremendous opportunities for growth.

I believe that each person wants to find fulfillment in life, and that through the therapeutic relationship, we can work together to achieve this goal. In today's world, there are so many pressures and obstacles that people face on a daily basis. I work to help people identify the factors that affect their lives, assist them in gaining insight into the causes of their problems, and develop real-life solutions to address problematic issues. I use techniques from various types of therapy to achieve this. I work to help people identify their strengths in order to increase resiliency and autonomy and develop growing self-respect.

I believe that the therapy relationship has the ability to provide healing, growth and change. Finding a therapist who helps you feel safe, supported and challenged is central to this process. My style is warm and curious as well as direct and challenging. I am an active participant in the process as we seek out the hard and stuck places that get in the way of balance and meaningful relationships.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
