Are you wondering if your drug or alcohol use is becoming a problem? Do you know it is a problem, but cannot seem to control it? Maybe you engage in a different sort of self-sabotaging behavior, such as binge-eating, compulsive spending or undermining your success at work. Self-sabotaging behaviors, including drug and alcohol misuse, are actions we choose but they feel automatic and inescapable. Often, they serve to maintain status quos, prevent growth, and imprison us in unhappy situations. I understand the pain and hopelessness that comes from repeating the same mistakes. It is never too late to change a limiting pattern.

While I have been trained in a number of modalities and work with a diverse group of clients, some areas of particullar interest are adults, young adults, couples counseling, LGBTQ issues, drug and alcohol use and abuse, grief and mourning as well as eating disorders and body related issues.
I believe that change and healing come through relationships; our relationship with self as well as our relationships with others. It is because of this belief that I approach my work as a collaborative venture that requires large amounts of both compassion and curiosity. It is my goal to create an atmosphere where these qualities can be nurtured and to provide the individual with the support and space to reflect on old patterns of behavior and the opportunity to respond in new ways that allow for a more fully realized and authentic way of living.

HAVE YOU OR OTHERS HAD CONCERNS ABOUT YOUR ALCOHOL USE? WHEN FEELING ANGRY OR FRUSTRATED DO YOU USE ALCOHOL OR OTHER DRUGS TO HELP RELIEVE YOUR NEGATIVE FEELINGS? Misusing alcohol, drugs, food or engaging in behaviors like excessive gambling or shopping to cope with strong emotions, may become habitual and as problematic as the negative feelings they are meant to alleviate.

I am committed to creating an atmosphere of trust, respect, and honesty. I listen attentively and believe that the relationship that we create together is the most important tool for our work together. My orientation is also psychodynamic, which means that I believe in the central role of the unconscious, past history and emotional forces. I apply this approach to many kinds of issues (depression, anxiety, addiction, difficulty in interpersonal relationships, general sense of dissatisfaction with life). My goal is to help you develop the awareness, insight, and psychological skills that you will be able to use later on your own.

As a native New Yorker, I understand the profound impact life experiences can have on our well-being and how this kinetic city shapes our lives. I have questioned: Am I enough? Am I doing enough? I’ve learned that everything that we go through matters, sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes it takes work to reveal. I am here to honor and explore the significance of every step in your process. Your story matters, and I am privileged to work alongside you as you uncover its hidden depths of self-discovery.

Have you felt things should be different in your life? Do you feel like everything you do is just leading you in the wrong direction? Have you felt depressed, anxious, or just generally low energy most of the time? This can be very difficult, and it’s common to feel this way. Unfortunately, many people learn to just brush these feeling aside expecting them to to go away. This can lead to a build up of difficulties, which can cause more frequent episodes and lead to long-term problems. If your goal is to rise above these feelings and thoughts, have you thought about therapy as a solution?

Hi, I'm Ray Schaub! I'm an alcohol/addiction recovery coach, as well as a mental fitness coach. I'm not a therapist or psychiatrist, although I support working with such professionals when appropriate. Our work together will be based on setting goals and taking actions. Together we can explore your options and create a plan that's in line with your own personal experience and desired outcomes, whatever they may be. Whether you have a lot of recovery time under your belt, or are just exploring whether recovery may be right for you, I'm happy to just lend an ear to see if I can help and if we're a good fit for each other.

Struggling to cope with intense worry, sadness, or anger can feel overwhelming and lonely. Reducing alcohol or other substance use can be similarly isolating and intertwined with negative emotions. Recognizing that there is a problem can be the largest hurdle, but finding a way to make those changes does not have to be. You may have already made attempts to change on your own and make things better, but it hasn’t quite worked out. Often, what to do and when to do it is not clear.

My practice combines traditional psychotherapy and chakra-based techniques to reach specific goals, stimulate change and growth, and heal memories and experiences. This mind-body approach can be thought of as nature's mind-healing mechanism and all types of clients (not just holistically-oriented) take to it readily. It is effective with most issues - work and relationship difficulties, finding direction in life and most disorders especially addictions, anxiety, and depression. I focus on developing intuition, becoming grounded and productive, expressing creativity and personal power, and connecting to self and other.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
