Loving someone with a substance problem can be agony. Frustration, arguing, isolation, guilt, blame, worry, hopelessness, fury–in a word, suffering–have eclipsed normal and everyday enjoyment. You may be desperate. You may be afraid that nothing will help. You just want it to stop. You don’t know if you should stay or if you should leave. You don’t know if you’re helping or making things worse. You can’t stand fighting and feeling mad all the time. Folks are telling you to give “tough love,” to “detach,” threaten, punish, give ultimatums, or “just” leave. You feel alone, misunderstood, and change seems like it will never come.

I don't know Where the Boys Are (movie) but I DO know where the Men are..in my office! Men are an underserved, misunderstood, and often villainized group. Most want to be the best versions of themselves and accomplish this through therapy. I strive to provide an accepting, nonjudgmental, safe space to unravel the mysteries of self. My sense of humor, practical approach, appreciation for direct comments, and an athletic background make me a good match for this population. I can mirror what you can expect from a healthy female in your life. Men suffer from abuse, poor boundaries, communication traps, and societal pressures.

The goal of Psychotherapy is to feel and function better in the world. That's what I help my clients do. I have been in practice for 40+ years, and have trained broadly and deeply in experiential, interpersonal and couples therapy. Before I was a psychologist, I was a nurse, and offer that background in helping as well. I bring the wisdom and insight of years of practice and life experience.

It has been pointed out to me by clients, colleagues, family and friends that they find it easy to talk to me. It is not uncommon for strangers to share there challenges and successes with me after a few words of casual conversation. If I were to list what I thought allows me to build rapport so easily, I would have to say that I believe it is because people are able to sense that I care about them genuinely. As a therapist, I care about seeing each one of my clients reach the goals that they set for themselves.

Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed? It's easy to feel unsettled these days. The pace of life just keeps getting faster and stress keeps piling on. In addition to worrying all the time you’ve also been having more physical problems: digestive issues, headaches, trouble sleeping. You never feel rested anymore. The truth is, you just don’t feel like yourself. It all seems like too much. With all that is going on it’s hard to know where to turn and who to trust. The good news is you don't have to face the difficulties of life alone. Together we can find an approach that works for YOU!

I have over thirty years of experience in helping professions including psychotherapy, counseling, higher education, and human services. My doctorate involved multiple disciplines, including psychology, philosophy and the arts. I am also a former yoga teacher. All of this experience has deeply influenced my practice. In addition to various more conventional therapeutic approaches (DBT, EMDR, insight oriented, etc.), I often include body/mind practices.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
