I am a business professional and psychotherapist. Most of my patients are busy business people who have issues that hold them back. I apply psychotherapy to help them practically improve lives. My clients have been very successful when they have worked at it. To succeed in therapy try new behaviors, disclose difficult experiences, and let go of old patterns of thinking and behaving. If you choose to call please be prepared to work to achieve results. You can expect mutual respect, confidentiality, and professional boundaries.

As a counselor, I work to provide interventions which not only alleviate immediate symptoms such as sadness, grief or anxiety, but also to facilitate greater self-understanding. I believe that counseling is an investment that can enhance your quality of life by helping you to develop a "tool box" of strategies to deal with challenges, improve self-esteem, find ways to get your needs met and develop skills to create healthier relationships.

We all want to decrease our suffering and to live happy, meaningful lives. As a dialectical behavior therapist grounded in mindfulness, I recognize the power of learning and practicing skills to bring about desired change. Whether you would like to increase your ability to manage your emotions; whether you struggle with interpersonal relationships; or whether you find yourself in a crisis situation; it would be a privilege to support you as you work toward your goals.

I have practiced throughout Maryland with patients struggling with substance use misuse and disorder and moderate to severe alcohol use.
Through my 15+ years in this work, I feel I am best equipped to support individuals who are struggling with alcohol/substance use or misuse that may be attributed to co-occurring mental health disorders, past trauma, or unknown reasons. I have worked with a variety of patients ranging from those experiencing minor struggles that may be impacting relationships to those hitting 'rock bottom' and lacking hope. If you are interested in changing any aspect of your drinking or substance use behavior, together, we can make that happen.

It can be a powerful time for trauma work when starting a family of your own. Often my clients are young adults and new parents who are highly self critical to avoid being with messiness and what cannot be controlled. They use alcohol, substances, food, exercise, work/ busyness or caretaking to manage or stay away from feelings. Often they expect the worst and prepare to self protect and can be overly focused on the people around them. My clients share about anxiety or depression since childhood or have complicated family of origin dynamics.

You struggle with how you see and feel about yourself. You never feel like you are “enough.” You are swimming in self-doubt and all you see are your imperfections. The inner critic that lives in your head is always on overdrive. Sometimes you just wish it would let up for a bit so you could have a moment of peace. It hurts to treat yourself this way, but you don't know another way to be. What would it be like if you weren't constantly berating yourself? In therapy, we will help you look at how you came to see yourself the way you do so you can contend with that voice of self-doubt differently.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
