I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in Eating Disorders and Substance abuse, and PTSD/Trauma. I approach my clients from a team stance, always making sure they have a well-rounded support base around them. I am EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) trained and use it as a tool with my existing clients and as well as see clients who primarily seek EMDR sessions to move stuck experiences and core beliefs. To me, the importance of therapy is to get your life back into balance as addiction and trauma can create an "all or nothing" element and a repetition of patters and maladaptive behaviors.

I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families of diverse backgrounds to successfully overcome a variety of problems, including depressive, anxiety, trauma- and stressor-related, eating, obsessive-compulsive, substance use and addictive disorders; difficulties with interpersonal relationships or life transitions; and challenges related to education or employment. However, there is no prerequisite for engaging in therapy, which can be a preemptive measure to care for and strengthen psychological and emotional well-being, a catalyst for personal development and self-actualization, and mechanism to enhance quality of life.

At times, we all need help with everyday challenges -and even more so when problems show up. It is difficult to reach out for help. Especially in a culture that emphasizes self-reliance and independence. Problems (such as depression or anxiety) can disconnect us from the relationships that might help us to heal. Since 2016, I have worked with individuals, couples, & families to manage the problems they are facing and help re-connect them to significant relationships. I have helped others with relationship challenges, trauma, depression, anxiety, grief/loss, and addiction.

“Stress is not the enemy in our lives. Paradoxically, it is the key to growth”. Stress is inevitable. However, if we can learn how to deal with our feelings and stress, we may convert negative situations into opportunities to become better and stronger. As a therapist, I use EMDR and other therapy modalities (DBT, CBT, solution-focused, etc) to help my clients manage the stress caused by relationship issues, trauma, disordered eating/body image, anxiety, life transitions, behavioral problems, career/school stress, anger, identity, communication, and more.

Hello! I am Dr. Efrain Zepeda. I am a bilingual (English/Spanish) Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Social Worker. In the past 23 years of working as a mental health professional, one important lesson I have learned is that the most powerful therapeutic intervention is found in the interpersonal connection that occurs in the client-therapist relationship. Together we can analyze the past to co-create a new meaning with the goal of achieving healing. I strongly believe that therapy is not about labeling or judging, but rather about personal discovery.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
