I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in Eating Disorders and Substance abuse, and PTSD/Trauma. I approach my clients from a team stance, always making sure they have a well-rounded support base around them. I am EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) trained and use it as a tool with my existing clients and as well as see clients who primarily seek EMDR sessions to move stuck experiences and core beliefs. To me, the importance of therapy is to get your life back into balance as addiction and trauma can create an "all or nothing" element and a repetition of patters and maladaptive behaviors.

My work as a psychologist is rooted in a profound belief that by recognizing and honoring our complex, messy life stories with honesty and gentleness, we lay the foundation to heal the obstacles preventing us from building fulfilling, meaningful lives. Throughout life, we all create narratives about ourselves to help us survive. These narratives are shaped by myriad factors (individual life experiences, relationships, intergenerational legacies, and experiences of oppression/privilege, belonging/rejection, among others). Over time, our narratives and coping mechanisms fall short. We wonder, what went wrong? Why? What's wrong with me?

I seek to help families, young adults and adults navigate recovery as it relates to substance abuse and mental health issues. If I could have an "ideal client", it would be someone that has never been to a residential facility before and to catch them before it gets to that point. Most often, the people I work with have some substance use history along with mental health issues. Fulfillment, time management, family relationships, communication, harm reduction, abstinence, stability, etc. are often topics that people I work with seek help for.

Many of us have gone through experiences that leave us feeling stuck, unmotivated, or without hope for change. The promise of psychotherapy is that it offers a path that illuminates the conscious and unconscious limiting beliefs we unknowingly come to identify with. It allows us a framework where insight becomes possible - and the opportunity for a relationship that is dedicated to knowing you deeply. In this sense, I believe we are partners working to understand your motivations, fears, and deepest hopes so that you can feel a greater sense of freedom and empowerment in your life and in your future.

Compared to many other psychologists, my therapy style may be more goal oriented, assertive, and with a stronger focus on observing and measuring therapeutic progress over longer term emotional processing. My approach is based on my belief that we do have the power to create healthy emotions & dismantle unwanted emotions. When meeting with you, I'll want to understand how your ongoing circumstances, emotions, behaviors, or thoughts impact the short term as well as the overall outcomes in your life. I base my treatment on evidenced-based inventions, eastern & wellness perspectives, and a conscious awareness approach.

Here's what I want you to know: You were born ready and able to be happy, and have a satisfying life--that's natures way. And, yet, at any point in life there can be many 'causes & reasons' for life turning in a different direction; and there can be many kinds of 'symptoms & behaviors’ that emerge when things go sideways; and when this occurs, we all can use some support to get back on track. For right now, just know that reaching for support is itself a sign of strength, and is also built into our human nature.

As a therapist, I call upon a variety of practices to nurture each individual’s or couple’s personal process. With a background in movement, music, art and drama, I approach therapy as a creative pursuit rooted in clinical analysis. I have a trauma-informed approach, allowing space for the many layers of stress that our culture can bring about in an individual or within a couple. I draw on traditional psychodynamic, Gestalt, Emotionally Focused Couples therapy, and relational methodologies, while incorporating eastern philosophies, symbolism, somatics, and creative or spiritual practices.

What keeps you up at night? Anxiety? Depression? A fucked-up relationship? Or do you simply find that the world is spinning out of order? As Marshall McLuhan said, "We don't know who discovered water, but we know it wasn't a fish." The point is: it’s hard to see the whole picture when you’re in the middle of the picture. That's where therapy helps. Therapy offers you the chance to sift through your thoughts, feelings, and ideas in a safe and compassionate space. From there, a deeper consciousness can emerge. And with that consciousness comes the opportunity to create change.

Therapy changed my life... It made it much worse. I’m kidding, it helped tremendously and inspired me to become a therapist myself! I had been suffering with depression, burnout, anxiety and more, but I would soon experience the power of working with a pro, and it saved my life. I'd be honored to help you like my therapist helped me.

Are you a professional, looking for ways to manage stress? Are you a creative person wanting to improve your relationships or make sense of obstacles that seem to keep coming up? Maybe you're highly successful and going through a major change or loss in your life that has left you anxious, depressed, or struggling with your overall health? Sometimes therapy is helpful to get us through a rough patch. And other times, perhaps it is unresolved trauma or a difficult childhood that stands between us and a sense of ease and comfort.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
